K guys I need some input. Sorry cuz most of you all probably don't give a shit about where I spend money on my truck, but I still have to ask.

I called a big-chain 4x4 shop and got a quote on an ARB locker using stock gearing and all necessary parts to install inmy truck. around $2000 installed

Then I called a toyota 4x4 shop with a good rep and they asked more questions and gave more info, telling me that I would likely want to regear as I plan to one day go to 35s. After talking a while, he suggested that I save money and go Detroit Locker, avoid the ARB compressor costs and get a tube rear bumper instead. Total price with Detroit, bumper and smitty-built portable compressor: about $1900

    What would you all do?

I don't like the idea of an auto locker, I like selectable. I paid $2500 to East Coast Gear Supply for my 4.88's (I highly recommend you get 4.88's for 35's). That paid for 4.88's front and rear set up in the diffs with an ARB locker in the front diff and an ARB CKMA12 compressor and shipping the assembled diffs to me and then shipping the old diffs back to ECGS. All I had to due was swap out the diffs which is pretty easy to do.

Might cost a little more for you since that was about a year ago and you are a non e-locker rear.

For the 4Hi talk, I want to install a tranny temp gauge so I can see what my tranny temps are like. I just don't know what temps are ok for a transmission. haha

Go with what Brady said. Auto lockers suck quite bad on the road. Click, pop, enguage, disengage...not pretty. If you dd it then just save your pennies and go selectable.

You will not want an auto locker. Go selectable.

Scan gauge II shows automatic tranny temps. Why Mike got one.

I want to say it doesn't for 2nd gens, but I could be wrong there, can't remember for sure. haha And I already have an Ultraguage. It was much cheaper than a scangauge especially since I picked it up during a group buy.

I imagine the 1st gen and 2nd gen ECU's are a lot different, especially since Mike and I have different tranny's as well as motors, so who knows. I kind of looked into the scangauge but I wasn't really concerned with tranny temps at the time and the scan gauge currently costs more than 3 times what I paid for my Ultragauge and I think the scangauge has even come down in price from when I bought my Ultragauge.

:)j/k Monte. He's right if you can afford to go with a selectable locker its the way to go but an auto locker is not as bad as everyone says. they will be WAY more noticable in a short wheelbase rig. But in a larger (longer wheelbase rig) they weird behavior is pretty transparent other than the ratcheting noise you hear making tight turns on pavement.

I've had an Aussie locker in the rear axle of my FZJ80 Land Cruiser for 5 years now and the Cruiser has been my wife's daily driver. If it had any weird behavior, believe me I'd have heard about it from my wife. I seriously forget its even there until I'm on the trail and the truck just goes through stuff without effort.

I hear most of you about the selectable locker, but after talking with this guy at addicted offroad, I don't think the auto locker sounds that bad. I don't drive like a bat out of hell, I take it really easy on wet/icy roads and I don't have tons of money.
The Detroit is looking pretty good right now. I will probably start a new thread somewhere so that I can ask this same question aqnd get opinions from guys who are not going to Moab, but I really appreciate the opinions you guys gave.

I know my aux trans cooler fan kicks on at 220. so that tells me they don't want the fluid to much hotter than engine temps..

I have an auto locker in my truck after 2 years of hard use and 35's it now will not unlock bitch grabs around corners and all but it's mind over matter if you don't mind it doesnt matter. Having said that the only reason i havent upgraded to an ARB is the simple fact that im SASing my truck and going to a 14B rear axle that will get an ARB, so bassicaly auto lockers are what they are ... A pain in the ass and they suck in the snow, but are less expensive.

Is this something you added on or is it factory? That would be pretty cool to have a 2nd e fan on the tranny cooler if I upgrade to an e-fan for the engine coolant.

I might just say fuck it and screw the whole locker idea for now and get my rear bumper figgered out. I know this truck will do quite a bit without a locker at all, but I do want to protect the truck from damage since I have to drive it daily.

Well... haha My locker saved me from damage at Moab last summer because I could just creep up obstacles without using speed like some of the open guys would need... Sorry to make this even more difficult for you... Most of us didn't have any/much armor in Moab and got by just fine without any damage. Drug our hitch receivers a lot though, but they can take it. I only had to bypass a few obstacles but I imagine without a locker you would be bypassing the obstacles as well or at least having a hell of a time with the obstacles.
