Spring Compressor help

Is there any easy way to use one?

Are there any tips or tricks that I need to know before using one?

 

know what it is rated for and make sure it can handle the tacomas coils (if thats what you are using it for)

 

What kind are you going to use?

 

The ones you can rent at auto parts stores are generally too weak to handle the tacoma coils

I have herd they can be very dangerous if not used properly. If you are putting on new shocks just take the springs and new shocks to a machine shop or a suspension shop to press them on for you. Then just put them back on your truck.

 

If you're unsure of how to use one then I would personally take the springs to a suspension shop and have them do the work for you. A compressed spring stores a lot of energy and it's not worth losing a finger or a limb over.

 

Honestly, I don't think you should attempt it if you haven't at least assisted someone in the past. You can be seriously injured. A better option would be to take them off your truck and bring them to an auto shop and pay a few bucks to have them done. The shops use the heavy duty (usually) wall mounted ones and are much safer.

i bent the hell out of the spring compressor by trying to use it on my springs! I took mine to a repair shop, and they charged me 15 to change the coils on both struts. FWIW

 

I think I'm just going to take mine to a shop and have them installed on the shocks. Especially since i'm upgrading to the OME885's that are a heavier rate than stock. You should probably do the same.

 

hahaha Yeah. But who would do that? I mean would a tire shop/store do it for me?

How long does it usually take for them to change out the shocks? How much money is this going to cost?

Any shop that does suspension work. Just call one close to you and ask.

Like the post above said, you're looking at probably $20 or so. But I'll ask you this: Are you fingers worth $20 to you?

 

I use the compressor at our Auto hobby shop on base. It's made to compress struts/springs for strut replacement. Works like a champ.

I'll also add, if you've never seen this done, DO NOT do it with them rental compressors...way to dangerous.

Yeah Im just going to stick to my OEM coils. Just change out the TRD crappys to 5100s. I will eventually change them to 885's but my wallet wont allow that right now

Yeah I would like and keep everything on me the same.

now $20 for both? If thats all then I have no problem taking it to a shop.

 

I never really liked the thought of RENTING a spring compressor after all the bad things Ive heard about them.

I can't imagine a shop charging much more. The shop around the corner from me quote me $25. It's very quick to do with the right equipment.

 

I dont think they were too quick with Chris and Packer.
