Spring Compressor help

I know the service manager at the shop near me- So I got to use their wall mounted unit for free- but if I had them do it- Woulda been about 20 bucks.

Took me all of 15 mins to do both springs- I have to go back and make sure their are torqued proper- but they are sitting in a box right now- not installed...so I have time.

After seeing what that wall mounted thing did to those springs- I wouldn't ever go within 20 feet of one of those bolt driven ones under load...Fux that.

 

what are the specs for torquing the bolts?

Im also guessing that you would have to use a neumatic........ tool(?)

 

Nope on the pneumatics. I used a ratchet drive wrench and that was it. and IDK what the specs are...have to look them up.
I went to very tight with the wrench and I'll double check it down the road.

 

Ill look in the manual when I get a chance.

Yeah just keep tightening once everything starts to settle

 

I would like to know where you found someone to do it for $20. All the shops i have went to wont even touch it b/c i didnt buy it from them (NTB, Firestone, Goodyear, Midas, Meineke). Also to have someone do all the work i keep getting estimates of $260+ to change them out.

 

Stupid question here. but how do you know when you have reached the 61 or 47 lb-ft.

is there a gauge for it?

 

Yeah, it's called a torque wrench. You set it at the correct ft./lbs. that you want and when the wrench reaches the torque you set it at it'll start to click and that's when you know you've reached the correct torque.

Where would I get one of those? Auto part store, Home Depot?

 

Auto parts store, Sears, Lowes may or may not have one. You can get one at Harbor Freight Tools too.

 

This is mine, I got it for $80.00. Used it on my truck 3 times and dropped 2 Scion tC's. It comes with 2 sets of jaws.

I have used the wall mount Branick units and while I would love to have have one, this works just as well and was quicker.

I agree, for your safety, it is worth the couple bucks to have a shop compress the springs for you.

 

It's good to learn new things. A torque wrench is a great investment.

I got it at the local Harbor Freight Tools. They sell a similiar one on eBay, but the jaws bolt on.

This thing has paid for itself several times over already. If you can find a shop around here that will do it for you, they want $50 bucks and higher to do it.
