Ok TacomaWorld, I need some help from our AK47 experts. I want to build a set of AK's, like the Saiga and the Saiga12, are they versions of the AK's? I want a rifle and a semi 12 gauge and don't know much about this platform. I believe I can pull off the rifle build but can the 12 gauge build be built off the same 80% reciever if I order a second? Sorry if this is a stupid question. What are some do's and don'ts? Thanks

I don't totally know what this meens but I looked them up and is about what i'm wanting in an end product but I want to build them from 80% recievers. Is the only difference in the barrels and possibly the front mount of the reciever(trunion-I think its called) basicly the front bulkhead that is rivited on? Are the guts(fire control group) the same? There are lots of great books on AR's out there that have helped me build some great rifles(I won't even pick up my store bought one any more) any similar info on ak's?

Will these tires fit without trimming?

jk jk...everyone will have their opinion and it depends on what you're aiming to do, but a good starter gun is always a Ruger 10/22 and similar models. Relatively inexpensive for the rifle and ammo, and extremely customizable. It's a good one to start with and move up from in terms of $'s and power in order to get the basics of shooting learned. After that, move on to a nice higher power bolt action.

Now with that said, now is about the worst time to buy a firearm due to the insane ammo market. All the "fun" calibers are getting bought up like hot cakes.

First gun I bought when I got my license was a Mossberg 590A1 (12 g shotgun). Shotguns are pretty versatile, and can be used for lots of different things. I now have a Ruger 10/22 which would be a good first gun, as its cheap as shit and so is the ammo. Its also quite reliable.

AR's are great and you can get an 80% reciever, finish it and buy the stuff you like verses buying a whole gun and switching the parts out later. The advantage is you can save money (even nowdays) you learn how to build, maintain, care, and the how the inner workings work and you end up with a bad--s custom gun that you built yourself. You can also do this with one of the best pistols of all time the 1911 as well as the ruger 10/22! Just be patient with the market and shop around. Check your local laws since you are in california! Since you start with an 80% reciever there are no serial numbers, no ffl transaction and they are not traceable. As far as I know it is legal to build a homemade firearm.

price range can vary greatly on the type of rifle and caliber. You need to get more specific on what you'd like

Because of the state in which you reside you need to set the parking brake on ANY purchases or even decisions until you review your state's draconian firearms laws. Memorize them as if your very freedom depends on it.

As far as shotguns go it depends on what you want it for. I've had a Rem 870 for years and its been great. They're relatively inexpensive and extremely reliable. I can't tell you how many times I've been on a duck blind and dropped my 870 in the water but it comes up shooting every time.
If you're in the market for an AR you may have picked a bad time. With all this talk on an assault weapons ban prices have gone up pretty high. As far as brands go, Colt, DPMS, Daniel Defense, LMT, and Sig make great rifles. I've also heard really good things about the Smith and Wesson M&P 15's. I bought a Colt LE6920 almost a year ago and it's been flawless. But any AR you get will fit the bill most likely. But expect to pay no less than $1000 for an AR in today's market. I've seen some recently for $1100 but I've also seen some for over $2500 which is ridiculous.

You can't beat a custom built! Wish I had the tools and know-how to build my own.
