Rear Bumper

i have a 08 tacoma off road TRD with a chrome bumper and i was wondering if anyone knows wherre i can buy a TRD sport bumper so it can match the color of my car

 

Unless you find someone selling it, about your only option is the dealers (try trdparts4u.com) and getting it matched at a shop (they don't come pre painted).

However, I just did a swap with OakleyTRD's (my chromie for his BSP) and I'll tell you, it was a pain in the ........ Seriously for about an hour we almost gave up trying to get it back on. Eventually after loosening the tow reciever (not sure if that actually helped as it's a welded bar), and putting every ounce of strenght I had pushing into the side we got it to slip in... there might be an easier way but we couldn't figure it out lol.

BKM on this one is, chrome ain't so shabby

I picked up somebody's spare chrome bumper this weekend and plan to de-chrome, prime and paint it. I have very low confidence that it'll end up looking as good as the factory ones, so my backup plan will be to sand the paint back off and paint it black w/ a bedliner of some kind. All the while I'll have the factory chrome bumper on the truck.

FWIW, I looked into buying a factory replacement and taking it to a shop to have it painted. All in it was going to cost over $600. I'm not saying you can't get it done cheaper, but I definitely decided against going that route.

Was it that difficult to take off the chrome bumper? I have looked underneath the bumper a few times trying to see what it would take to remove the rear bumper and it didn't look too bad. Do you have a Toyota factory hitch or an aftermarket brand? My plan is to remove the Chrome bumper and have Line-X spray it (probably $100). I already have Line-X coated sliders and front skids so I'm hoping it will look good.

 

I feel bad for hijacking the thread... but do you think that the line-x will stick to the chrome? I thought chrome was impossible to paint.

 

grind off the chrome and it will stick. it should stick anyway but just in case.

 

Absolutely agree with prepping the bumper before dropping it off. My sliders were raw metal and the Line-X has performed extremely well. The Line-X dealer I use here in Tampa has a sample spray where they did a set of chrome nerf bars and it looks solid. Basically you need to rough up the chrome finish to help create adhesion so I'll talk with the shop about what is needed. Seems like this is a better option then trying to go the paint route at least with a chrome bumper.

 

Yeah... I'm definitely not going to try painting unless I can get the chrome off. My father-in-law said he'd call in a favor to one of his customers that owns a shop that deals w/ chrome a lot. (I don't know what they actually do.) He said they can drop the bumper in some tub of chemicals and the chrome will come off. You have to prime it very quickly or the newly exposed metal will rust. Still... if I can get that done I'd be happy.

 

Sounds like a good approach. You often hear on those hot rod car shows that a bumper was sent out for re-chroming so I assume that they take it back down to raw metal before re-chroming. I would love to have the painted bumper but for roughly $100 and a little elbow grease I can change the rear bumper looks big time. Also, there is an improvement in durability (scratch resistance) versus chrome or paint but you got to like the way that stuff looks. By the way, Line X claims they can color match the material to the truck color...that could be another option if you don't want black.

 

Haha, awesome I'm glad that worked out for him. Just think though, the stocker you got will just get replaced with way more awesome!

 

I sold my painted for a chrome bumper and it was a bitch to install.
The bumper came off pretty easy but going on was a different story.
Went to a friend's bodyshop because I needed a hydraulic spreader(don't know what the tool is called) to spread an area where the bumper area goes between two brackets.

 

yeah ill sell you my chrome bumper as soon as i buy the other bumper but my chrome bumper got hit a little on the right side but you cant really tell unless you look at it really close, i can take a picture of it and show you if you want me too?
