Industrial engineering. Started out as mechanical engineering but I like the manufacturing and industry side more so industrial engineering is more specialized in that regard.

I can attest to the C's get degrees lol! I graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, had a cumulative GPA of around a 2.9 (freshman year almost gobbled me up whole, spent 3 years trying to recover). The GPA is bullshit unless you are trying to apply to a global company where they ask for it on their website application. I never once mentioned my GPA on my resume and was never once asked about during any interview I went to - they just don't care.

My only advice is to get an internship somewhere while still in school. It doesn't matter if you get the office coffee and took out the trash, I have a few friends who never had work experience in a Civil Eng. environment and 3 years post graduation, still do not have a job in their intended field. Work for free if you have to - just learn to use the CAD program specific to your intended field (Civil/Enviro: AutoCAD; Mech: Revit and Solidworks). If your potential employer knows that you already know how to speak the language and they do not have to hold your hand through the training process, you will be all the better.

I've done 2 co-ops so far and will do 2 summer internships at different companies before I graduate. That will give me networking abilities through 4 companies, plus one already wants me after college. I hope to have a lot of negotiating power when I graduate, depending on the job market.

X2 on internships. I went to Illinois State and most of my friends that have jobs in their intended field had internships. My GF didn't do one and she ended up doing 2 internships after she graduated before she finely got a job.

It's a lot of fuckin work. Your business degree friends will be drinking 5 days a week while you study until 2am. Pays off hugely though.

make sure and land a job in the AF that has something to do in the civi world once you get out. I was a munitions specialist...doesnt really apply to the civilian world.

This. Im a civy on a govt contract and it expires March 31st...at that time it was either suppose to renew, extend, or a new contractor would pick it up. Right now no one knows what is going to happen.

Out of high school my classmates and teachers thought I'd be an engineer when I graduate. But I had a falling out with an ex and there was no way in hell I could go to the same school and field as her. Instead I got in to security right after high school. Then after a year, worked gy shift and paid my way through school. Studied sustainable construction. Ironically she showed up at the sites I worked on. She didn't know it but I put in a good word for her with the owner of the company. Sadly the economy crash before I finished and no jobs available. So I fell back on security. I know it's not much but I accumulated a hefty savings account with a nice 401k along with co-owning my parents house. Most of my friends are struggling to pay of their loans and barely afford living expenses. As for me, I am finishing a degree in electronics and computers engineering technology and heading into applied business information technology. Also got a job offer to work at our hq in Orlando. But I turned them down. I figure keep my regular salary of $50k a year not including the cash I get from side jobs. And in three years be able to make almost twice as much.

Didn't figure it out til a few years ago. Tried to transfer to the engineering department at my current job site but the manager at the time had it out for me. It wasn't until this past year hr found out my credentials. They asked me why I never applied and when I told them I did they found out that the manager at the time never pushed my transfer requests through. But by then I had already decided to go back to school. The company now wants to find a way to keep me with the company.

I’m same age and see all the same stuff man! kids these days have it all. see damn 8 year olds with iphones and ipads. I got a flip phone for my 13th, and mostly because i went and did a lot with people, and was out running around the neighborhood all day every day i could. Parents would drive and look for me, sometimes i’d be helping someone with leaves or something. phone helped them out. Most just stay inside and play video games. I was out side every day that i could be, staying out after dark. brothers had N64 and stuff but i much rather be out side swimming or making up some game.(hell even in the poring rain) games back than were MUCH MUCH better IMHO. I say sir and MA’ma as well, and i got my fair share of ass whooping's with a belt! Grounded in my room for a week or 2 and 19” tv was taken out.
X2 all these damn tv shows is whats really the problem! Also I don’t get the hole “put god back in schools” what religion are they going to put in schools? also pretty sure it would violate freedom of speech. Now doing get me wrong, if someone wants to be a few religious person/family let them be, but don’t force it on other. I have meet a few people that say we need to put god back in schools, They are the same ones that told me if i did not go to church every sunday or be a Christen person i was going to hell. Now I don’t hate any religion at all! I have gone to church with several friends of different religions. (ok i got pretty off topic but what ev)
I think most school are different. I know some schools are here that are very very hard!! But some are pretty easy. i did not learn much at all in MS. learned more when we moved and i changed schools and started HS, I learned twice as much. only thing i sucked at is english.(got like C’s and D's:rolleyes:) math and others i was pretty good at and got A’s and B’s

I also stayed back in 1st grade, and agree it is not bad and may help. Also think they need to teach more real world lessons. I don’t think most people use half the crap they learn in school. a lot of stuff is life lessons. (i learned my fair share of those in HS as well. from my self and friends)

I know if and when i have kids i will try and teach them everything i know that does not have to do with school.(like fixing and working on stuff around the house and not paying to do it, or fixing stuff on the car or truck.(even if i have a daughter she will know how to change a flat tire before she can drive. or put new whipper blades on, add washer fluid. ext)
