mine are all gone. Can I call dibs on any unsold tagalongs or thinmints?

BTW, one problem led me to fix another. Been losing 5psi every night since off-roading. Threw on the spare this morning until I can find the puncture. Now my drivetrain vibration is gone.

Silas, was hoping to drop in to DT tomorrow around 5-ish to have the puncture fixed and the tire rebalanced. Is it better to make an appointment or just drop in?

Let me look into the fuse block and put down everything I think I want done and I'll run it by you. Really appreciate the tip on the double battery setup. I know the basic theory of electron flow but getting into practical aspects is a bit sketchy for me. Hoping to do this right from the get go and look forward to advice, help and everything else.

When peeps talk about the size of an axle, they are actually referring to the size of the ring gear for the differential.

I've been doing a some research for you to figure out what axle you have and what diffs you can run. So far, it looks like you have what most peeps call a Tacoma 8.4" axle.

A post I found from pirate:

    http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyota-truck-4runner/228681-myth-settled-8-4-v6-4cyl-all-8-a.html

The easiest thing to actually do is contact East Coast Gear Supply and inquire about a 3rd member and have them build it up with a locker:

    http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/c-62270-assembled-3rds-clamshells.html

This is easiest because they do the ring&pinion setup for you and you just pull the axle shafts, pop the old 3rd, put the new one in and re-install the axle shafts. Easier said than done but takes out the guess work of 'splodin' the rear-end because the backlash wasn't done right.

I highly recommend the ARB since selectable is good. Expensive but good. Detroit lockers are well known with good and bad qualities. They will open up when in enough of a turn to allow different wheel speeds but they still cause excessive tire wear and induce some funky handling. Some reading material for you:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locking_differential

There is also a bunch of limited slip differentials to consider as well. They are a little friendlier on tires but require extra maintenance (usually a gear oil additive) due to clutch packs and knowing how to use them (tapping the brakes to get them to engage). I had an Auburn limited-slip in my old XJ and liked how it worked. Would've rather had an ARB locker but couldn't afford it at the time.

    Another website for good reading:

So just looking at that clamshell does this mean ill always be locked or would I have a switch to chose to lock or not?

Looks like they were practicing welds or something? Otherwise, I'm not sure how they would have pulled it out of the housing like that.

The one on ECGS's website? Looks to be an ARB locker but not 100% sure. I'm guessing the copper tube is the air supply. That would be a selectable with a switch in the cab. Silas would be a good resource. He's put an ARB locker in his front diff.

7.5" rear on 1st gen 5-lugs, 8.4" on 2nd gens... Lincoln lock would not be the best option for this truck, me thinks....... It's a daily driven 2wd. :eek:Would eat rear tires, put extra stress on the axles, and i don't think Kyle would like the chirping on corners, or terrible traction in snow/ice. haha
Tom is correct, you have the 8.4" axle. (called 8.4" since that's "supposedly" the diameter of the ring gear) (it's actually closer to 8", but that's another story...)

Good thinking... ARB is fully selectable like an e-locker. ('On' or 'off' via a switch in the cab) It requires you to install an on-board air compressor to actuate the locker, though. (like on mine) You can get a small one from ARB for about $200, I think. Best option (IMHO) would be ECGS and you can re-gear at the same time.. (my reccomendation would be 4.10s to restore some power and gas mileage since we slapped on those big ol' 32" tires!!! haha)

Your third member plus different options to play with... I'd reccomend the 4.10 gears (which it looks like you'll have to call to check availability on) with either the ARB or lockrite locker: http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-788575-tacoma-8-4-non-eld-t100-tundra-3rd.html

Or for a bit cheaper option, you could get an "automatic" locker that locks up under power.. (like the lockrite locker that's listed as an option for an ecgs third.) Tend to be a little bit noisy on corners, but not bad from what I've read... (definately not as bad as the chirping or wear from a welded rear end) Explained here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kL0hPEOStGk

Also, these thirds are pretty commonly up for sale as used. So you might be able to get a cheaper used one.... I can keep my eye out for some on the other forums..

If you get an 8.4" third from ecgs or find a used one with 4.10s and the locker of your choice, we could do the install in my driveway in a few hours. (With the bagels and shmear, of course! lol) ooor if you're fine with your current power and gas milage and don't want the extra cost of regearing, you could just get the locker of your choice... ARB would be a stinkin pain to install and wouldn't be done in one day, but I wouldn't mind installing a lockrite for you. lol http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-128197-tacoma-t100-8-4-powertrax-lock-right-1615-lr.html
    lol

    HOBART LOCK, BRA
hahaha Both of mine are almost gone... prolly will be gone by tonight. :D

    and pleasanter? :)

Forgot about the Lockrite. Would be the cheapest option since you don't have to futz with replacing the carrier.

I'd be up for helping out if you do replace the 3rd. I'm going to be locking the front and regearing all the way around sometime this year and would like to see how it's done.

yay! hit 2500 views on my build page. A mere pittance compared to Silas' but a nice little milestone nonetheless.

Okay yeah! So looks like lockrite would be the best option! Sounds like a plan... My only question how is the locker engaged? Also what's the difference between the two:
