    Yup.
Dad made just under $3/hr working for North American Aviation... bought a house (a whole $18k on a 30 year mortgage) and managed to keep two fairly new vehicles in the driveway, while still giving 10% of his income to the church.
Mom didn't work until the 70s when the political climate made aerospace shaky, though dad only endured one long term layoff after Carter swatted the B1. The Shuttle got him back to work.
But even though being off work for 9 months, they were still able to keep me in a private school.

sounds like we were raised in simular situations.

my dad bought a tract home in 1956 for 14K...99bux a month for 30 years on the GI loan. (he still lives in the home)

his 1st new car (and only new car to date) was a 1963 Chevy Biscayne 6 banger-3 on the tree...for 1,200bux. he couldn't afford the wagon for the extra 200bux...and an Impala was out of the question.

he worked 2 jobs to pay for it all...and kept us living like we were middle class...when we actually were poor folk.

he too gave 10% or more to the church...we attended every Sunday...and he helped countless others financially. I really don't know how he did it. Other than he is a selfless and Godly man.

Being SoCal aerospace, we were solid middle/upper middle class.
First cars I remember were a '53 and '57 Buick... both "inherited" from my grandparents. The '53 was the first car that I wrenched on... I was probably 3 or 4 when dad handed me a wrench and had me "help" him change the oil. I was doing brakes (drum) and repacking bearings before I was 10.
The '53 was replaced with a (used) '63 Falcon 2 door, 3 on the tree.
The '57 was replaced in '71 with a '69 LeSabre.
Falcon was replaced by their first new car... '73 Vega, and the Vega was replaced by a new '74 K5 Blazer in less than 6 months.

Buick was given to me when I turned 17, mom got an Old's Omega (front wheel drive model), and the Omega was replaced by a Buick Regal after about 2 years. Blazer was replaced by an F350 Diesel in '84... they still have that F350, but it only gets driven once a year to the inspection station in Austin, and their daily driver is a '94 Camry.
Okay... mom's daily driver. Dad's 90 and doesn't drive anymore.

    2 brand new knees.
He used to be my height too.
But that's 90 years of clean living. Never smoked or drank a drop in my 50 years, and knowing what I know about him, I'm sure that was the case when he was in the Navy.

1st Class Petty Officer, served in the Marshall Islands in '45/'46... swears he didn't see any "action"
