I did a quick search and couldn't come up with an answer. Is the 1GR-FE (2nd gen 4.0) an interference or non-interference engine?

Also while searching around I found this info on Toyota's website:

    http://www.toyota.co.jp/en/tech/environment/powertrain/engine/index.html

I wonder if this means that a future Tacoma may come with a 2GR-FSE or 2GR-FE engine due to increased fuel efficiency...

I believe the general consensus is that it is non-interference.

    Too few to list.

I believe the Toyota Venza is now using this engine.

an engine is called an interference engine when there is more than 2 valves per cylinder, a non interference engine is only 2 valves per cylinder, the interference is caused by the possibility of 2 or more valves possibly striking one another, which could cause them to bend or break, which in turn could ruin your cylinder head and require an engine rebuild...

    just my 2 cents

There are such thing interference 2 valve engines and non-interference 4-valve engines. It has to do with the possibility of the piston crown and the valves trying to exist in the same place at the same time in the event that timing is incorrect. I can't think of a situation where intake and exhaust valves could collide because if the timing belt/chain let go, neither would be in motion.

From what I have read is that all of the VVT-I engines are interfernce engines, including the 4.7L in my tundra which happens to be belt driven.

    Good find

I wasn't concerned really...just curious. I had a conversation recently about a prevoius engine I did work on and wondered about the 1GR-FE.

    What year is your Tundra?

Incorrect. Interferance engines are ones in which the piston takes up the space the valves do when they are open, and the piston is at TDC. When the timming drive system (Belt or chain) breaks, this can lead to damaged pistons and/or bent valves, as well as other damage.

OP, Toyota does not manufacture an interferance engine. The only ones who do (IIRC) is Honda, Mazda, and a couple of older Nissan engines.

Um, What? I hope that isn't true, if so I'd love to see the reference.

Interfere = Valve (intake or exhaust) in fully open position can hit the top of the piston in the fully up positon.
Non-interefere = Valves fully open cannot hit the top of the piston in the fully up position.

This is important when a cam shaft belt or chain breaks because the piston will come in contact with any valves in thier opened positions and cause engine damage on an interfering engine. This is why a non-interfereing engine is nice to have. If a timing belt/chain breaks on the non-interfering engine you can make a safe assumption you will not need to replace pistons and valves which get costly.

    Hope this helps.

The only "Link" I have is that I have torn these engines apart, and one of my buddies works only on Toyota engines. otherwise, I have no proof...:(
