From what I understand they are double clutched Paddle shifters. The driver initiates gear changes using paddles mounted on the back of the steering wheel and electro-hydraulics perform the actual change as well as throttle control. Clutch control is also performed hydraulically, except to and from a standstill, when the driver operates the clutch using a lever mounted on the back of the steering wheel.

Personally I am a fan (just kidding didnt work to well) of McLaren's experimental AWD car in the 70's? (Fact check me) being a truck guy and maybe because i sharing the name :D

I prefer manual any day of the week. I specifically wanted the six speed when I was shopping around for my truck, and it took a bit, but I found it. I keep hearing that the auto was designed for the power of a V8, and while that is probably true, it's not like the 4.7 had that much more power than the 4.0; 271 hp/315 tq vs 239 hp/278 tq (running premium in the single VVTI 1GR-FE). I could see the point in that argument if the auto was the one from behind the 5.7, but it isn't.

As for the durability argument, I don't really see it as much of a comparison. One clutch and a throwout bearing versus more than three clutch packs, multiple solenoids, and the sensors that control all of it? Do the math. Just the difficulty in servicing the auto would be enough to drive me away. The only problem I've ever had with my manual was a squeaky clutch pedal, and that was easily remedied with some lithium grease. And if the auto ever does gives you problems, do you realize how much parts cost? A single shift solenoid will run you around $300, and there are at least 4 of them! And those are just the solenoids. Will I ever have to replace my clutch in my manual, I'm sure. Is replacing one clutch easier/cheaper/more cost effective than replacing an entire automatic transmission when that transmission starts to give you problems, hell yes it is!
