I do as well. Not that it's better, because I've had the auto, I just like it.

Carroll Shelby's personal Cobra (CSX 2589) was a Ford C-4 automatic. Shelby preferred automatics. Why? Who cares, he's Carroll freakin' Shelby. All further discussion about manual transmissions being superior is rendered moot. :D

Sticks are fun when your younger, when you get older its too much work! Toyota builds good transmissions, always has. I worked for Toyota for 4 years running the Service Dept, my hands were on every single repair order that rolled through the shop. Can count on one hand how many transmission were internally torn into in that 4 year period. We didn't even have a tranny tech! I worked for Dodge and Ford for a year a piece, and we had no less than 2 tranny techs and they were knee deep in a tranny every day of the week, its not even comparable. There is no better or worse in regards to Toyotas manuals or auto's...theres only preference!

    Good thread.
Not gonna vote cause it seems pretty even so far.
I blew my auto trans after 90k.
I would have loved to have had a manual but bought the truck used.
I bought a "new" trans right from toyota. We will see what I get for mileage on this one.
I really like the 5 speed availability with the tacos auto too.

I love manuals, but went with the auto for the Tacoma. Already have a fun car with manual, plus I read a good bit of people who weren't crazy about the manual with the V6. If it were my only vehicle, I would have went with manual regardless, though.

Having had to fix these darn gearboxes for the past 20 years .
I chose automatic as the stronger gearbox .
Why did I choose automatic ?
2 times tork multiplication from the tork converter which means better low end power in comparison to a manual transmission . Thats towing and off the line .
Yes, that tork converter in your automatics actually double the tork from your engine while its in stall stage .
Once the tork converter goes into coupling stage , the automatic turns into a slush box and even worse once the converter locks up .
I havnt looked into the actual Toyota foot pounds of tork that the manual transmission provides in compariosn to the automatic , but tork converter multiplication always has an advantage over simply letting your foot off the clutch in first gear .
I suppose you could argue that adding a beefy clutch would make the comparison a little more even ..........not even close . The automatic would still be stronger off the line or towing from a dead stop .
Now add a high stall or low stall converter (depending on your needs )to the A-750E transmission and a re-calibration shift kit to the valve body of the automatic and you have some superior strength and longevity and to boot youve fixed everything in the trans that Aisn Warner /Toyota didnt design correctly .
    We can MOD the automatic
Now try To get the same results from the manual transmission .....

First off, it's torque... hopefully you know that though and were just using tork as a short hand. (Sorry that bugged me really bad for some reason haha).

Is the torque converter really a 2 to 1 multiplier? I never found anything specific to Toyota but I found that typically torque converters are only about a 1.25 to 1 multiplier. I've never seen a dyno comparison between autos and manuals, not one you can use to accurately see a difference from the torque multiplier of the converter anyway.

Most of the X-runner guys beef up their clutch and go to a lighter fly wheel. I haven't heard of any different torque converter options for our tranny's but there is the valve body upgrade that is supposed to be pretty amazing.

Oh and you and I both have the A750F tranny. A750F mounts to a Tcase and the A750E mounts to a driveshaft. No difference internally between the two though:p

They run stock automatics . Its cheaper to blow the stock automatic units up every day than it is to pay for all the mods needed inside the transmission to drive the monster tires and take all the tork from the high performance engines .
    I have repaired many .
A lot of monster trucks run 2 speed General Motors powerglides

Yes , just using Tork as a shorty and yes , the tail shaft is the difference between the A750F and the 750E .
I will dig up some numbers to back up my post .Almost all automatics are 2 x multiplier or darn close . I didnt get the actual numbers off the Toyota website to show how much multiplication the converter truly is , I am just going by known facts . 1.25 multiplication seems a little low but I will get back to you .

This is from the Toyota website 2013 Tacoma V6 ... doesnt really support my case though .
    Towing

Hitch up and hit the road with Tacoma's towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. (1,587 kg). Add the 4X4's SR5 and TRD Offroad Packages (Access Cab V6) and SR5, TRD Sport Packages and new Limited (Double Cab models) and increase the load to a whopping 6,500 lbs. (2,948 kg — manual), 6,400 lbs (2,903 kg — automatic).

    The 750E
    1st gear 3.52:1
    2nd gear 2.042:1
    3rd gear 1.4:1
    4th gear direct drive 1:1
    5th gear 0.716:1
    Reverse 3.224:1

Torque makes things spin; Tork makes shit tickets (which also spin, but I digress). http://www.torkusa.com/
Also no matter how much force multiplication your torque converter has, the difference can be compensated with gears down the line. It is around 2-2.5x on most automotive applications though. All depends on design.
When talking about Tacos specifically, the auto is a bit stouter. But generally speaking a direct comparison is nearly impossible. They both have their strengths and pitfalls.

An auto is also easier on the engine. Having a fluid coupling between the engine and drivetrain dampens any shock loading that might occur. Crankshafts are designed to flex a bit, but the less they have to the longer they'll last.

I still like my 6 speed. Does preference make my schlong bigger or only if I spew facts about why one is better than the other?
