Hey guys. I have a prerunner (2wd). I have taken it to the snow a couple times with about 240 pounds in the bed. I had to put on chains 1 time and the truck did great. I got new tires. They are Goodyear wrangler authoritys. They have done great in the mud but I have not taken them to the snow. Has anyone used these in the snow yet? How do they do?

1 - correct, autoLSD doesn't limit engine throttle. I may have misspoken in the video, I read this thread and decided to make the video on the way home :D

2 - incorrect, I was giving it a lot of gas. Throttle was limited by the truck. My phone probably doesn't pick up on noises as well as a real video camera, but I assure you it was trying to distribute torque to the spinning rear wheel, but there isn't enough torque to get the truck going.

Taco's do fine in snow once you get the 4WD system engaged. But I really hate this ADD system, requires too much flipping the switch back and forth. Why didn't they give us a manual transfer case?

They gave us the weakest V6. I'm tired of this ADD not engaging right away, pisses me off fucking around with this switch until it engages. Ridiculous. I would be ok with the weakest V6 if they gave me an ADD that could engage on the first flip of the switch. I'm pissed off by this weak drivetrain combination.

It's not like our V6 is that much weaker than the other one. Hell they are damn near the exact same motor, just have a different valve set up I believe. Having a manual Tcase wouldn't make 4wd engage any faster. You need manual hubs to replace the ADD. The manual case 1st gens still have an ADD...

I am thinking you are doing something wrong when trying to engage 4wd... Mine always engages on the first try and usually within 2-5 seconds of flipping the switch.

To shift into 4Hi you have to be in gear and driving. This will allow the ADD to line up and engage, once that happens the Tcase engages almost instantly. If you are trying to engage 4Hi while stopped it can be finicky because the ADD likely isn't lined up right.

To go into 4Lo you have to first be in 4Hi, then you stop, shift into neutral and then flip the switch to 4Lo and it should engage very rapidly. Then you can put it back in gear and go.

i live in randolph,ny. Two years ago we recieved 48inches of snow in a 24hour period,a record for ny state. I was working in cuba ny,35 miles away. Interstate 86 had not been plowed at all, but my yota had no problem getting to work that morning. I didnt see to many other vehicles out that mourning.I had my studded snow tires on and had my usuall 200lbs in the bed. I was the only dumbass 2 show up that day,and the weather just got worse throughout the mourning,so i just stayed and welded some steampipe. in my opinion these 1st gen yotas are the shit in the snow. ive had jeep cherokees, front wheel drive cars ford ranger 4x4, full size doge and chevy, they aint got shit on my 2004 trd 3.4L tacoma.I have some bad winters here and im a union pipe welder who is on the road for a living im an expert at being on the snowy roads when everyone else is calling in.

Oh no, the noises (beeps and grinds) are definitely loud enough for you to hear on your phone camera. Plenty of people bitch about them enough as even more evidence.

Anyways, thanks again for the vid. I think we need some more of those types to get everyone squared away with traction control uses and scenarios.

The 09+ system might be a little different, but mine only beeps when it senses the vehicle sliding, like if I try fishtailing a corner or something. If I just spin the tires while traveling straight there is no beeping just grinding that really isn't all that loud.

You boys from cal and the south - please don't even comment about snow - you don't know what snow is.

If it does'nt come over your bumper - it ain't a snow 'storm'

Depends on where you live. Sadly Idaho now salts their roads pretty heavily though....

I think you're onto something here. The beeping/grinding might be when the steering wheel is turning. So beep/grinds only when VSC thinks you're sliding, as opposed to just not having traction?

Yeah. Pretty sure VCS is what tries to keep your vehicle driving straight down the road, so if you start fishtailing it activates and tries to correct for the fishtailing. Trac and ATrac are what try to give you traction to get moving on low traction surfaces. The beep is associated with just VCS for me.

This was a local lake. Not too deep of snow but with reasonable at tires and 240# of sand you pull right through.

driving in snow depends more on tire choice, not the vehicle. It is 70 % tire choice 30% skill (throttle control). I run studded snow tires in the winter here, i find that works best for me. I can go where i want when i want in all conditions.

Never gotten stuck, and I've pulled quite a few others out of ditches with it so I'm happy.
