:) Warren, when you mentioned you have driven over 5000 miles, How much of it was in city or slow driving? Could you have a carbon build up in the engine? Could the knock sensor be bad on this engine and not show a check engine light? Since the higher octane gas has helped, to me it seems like you have a lot of carbon in your motor. I could be wrong. Good Luck.

I have no clue how you all make your truck "ping" I don't waste money on high test fuel burn what ever gas is cheapest I have a 6 spd. and I can mat it in 5th at 1000 RPM and can not make it ping no matter how hard I try. The manual says 87 (or greater for those of you that like to spend money needlessly) Maybe Toyota just likes to install knock sensors that don't do any thing.

My 2012 does this occasionally when the weather is cold and I have not let the engine heat up for a few minutes prior to driving away. It was a lot worse with low octane gas. Running premium now and it ticks / knocks a lot less at the start then before. But letting the engine run for a few minutes first thing in the morning sure helps. After doing this it never happens again that day with a warm engine.

Is there any chance the "Pinging" damaged my motor?

I filled up my tank today with 17 gallons of "89" $4.35 a gal :( octane and checked my fuel log book and only got 14.59 MPG'S........

I normally only drive on the streets and i drive slow but that's terrible....

Should I run down and get a bottle of seafoam to add to the tank?

I'm going to be super bummed if I pull a plug and it's black in there....

Do NOT use seafoam under any circumstances. It will most likely wash your rings out and you will need a rebuild sooner than later down the road.

Compression test will tell you how healthy the motor is (look for variance between cylinders more so than the absolute psi)

    Bull Shit.

Seafoam when used as per the instructions on the can will not wash out anything.

By properly doesn't mean dumping it down the intake.

Add it to the gasoline tank or oil as per the label.

All of the 5k miles on my truck are pretty much stop and go up to 50mph..

I would say some freeway but the freeway here in So Cal is crap and slower then the streets...

I'm a big fan of sea foam in my outboard motors but they have been 2 strokes...

I havent tried it on my 4 stroke yet.....Warren

I've never been to Maine, but I am getting 14.8 MPG with full skids, slider, winch and front/rear bumpers in the same region as the poster.

I see all the people claiming 21 MPG but living in an area like Seattle with tons of hills makes it impossible to get that mileage. I get 14-15 MPG using super, also with all smiles and no pings.

Maine has mountains even on the coast it gets damn cold and snowy lots of 4 wheel drive weather I use 87 with alcohol it is a manual I can't make it ping and get from 16 to 22 mpg depending on weather I'm all smiles with cheaper fuel.

    According to the label,

It CLEARLY says to use in vaccum lines as well as gas and oil. Last time I checked, your vacuum lines lead right to the intake manifold

    http://honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=1502112

Notice how he posts in 2006 claiming Seafoam worked wonders for his car, even took the time to make a How-To post to show everyone how to use it. In 2008 he said to avoid using it and to be very careful if you do use it. In 2012 he edited the post again stating NEVER to use it.

I also have first hand experience with the product, on TWO different cars.

So before you go around calling my statements bullshit, check your facts and come back once you can prove me wrong

Manual says manufacturer recommends 91 octane. There's no limiting the ping with additives. It's still there with 91 octane too. Just not as bad. May be hearing the Taco Tick.

Bullshit. Come back with facts. Not some honda forum bullshit. Prove yourself right.

Edit: Actually I'll take some of that back because there is plenty of sage advice in that thread disputing the OP's and your claims.

So just because it's a Honda forum everything posted is blasphemy? I personally rebuilt two motors whose oil control rings got washed out by using less than 1/2 cup of Seafoam sucked thru a vacuum hose. Do you want pictures? One motor had 110k, the other 80k and were fairly healthy and compression tested fine without any oil consumption. A week after using Seafoam, I gradually notices more and more oil consumption until both cars were puffing blue smoke.

I have been using Seafoam probably longer than you have been alive. Your post about washing out the rings and ruining your engine is totally Bull Shit. Use it or not it doesn't do what you stated unless you followed Honda Boys guide. Stupid is as stupid does.

I read your stupid Honda Forum link. Did you read it? That kid has to be the stupidest moron on the planet. He ruined his own engine. That is your evidence that seafoam will damage your rings? Stupidity will damage your rings, seafoam will not IF used properly.

Just read some of this crap he specifically admitted. These are quoted excerpts:

1.) I no longer recommend using excessive amounts of seafoam. Use 1/3 bottle ONCE per 100k miles at most.

2.) IF YOU USE TOO MUCH SEAFOAM LIKE I DID, YOUR PISTON RINGS WILL BE GONE AND YOUR CAR WILL BURN OIL LIKE A GOD DAMN OIL REFINERY!

3.) Once about 1/4 the can is used, turn the car off.... Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes.

4.) Turn the car on be prepared to drive around at at LEAST 4000 rpm constantly until you exhaust no longer smokes. I take my car up to redline when shifting and cruise at about 5600, just enough to keep it in VTEC.

5.) Repeat with another 1/4 of the can once you no longer blow smoke from the first pass.

6.) DON'T USE MORE THAN A FULL CAN IN ANY SEAFOAMING SESSION. I learned this the hard way after using 5 cans of seafoam, and have successfully dried out my valve stem seals causing me to burn oil.

7.) If you feel like really getting rid of that carbon, then run seafoam through your spark plug holes.

8.) Take your spark plugs out (make note of what wire goes on which plug, otherwise you will fck up your timing badly if you mix the wires). Put a very small amount, 1-2 tablespoons, in each cylinder. Let it soak. You may see it reacting with the carbon bubbling, or you may not. After 15 minutes, put the plugs back in and drive the hell out of your car (not neccessary to bounce of the rev limited, just 5k rpm) UNTIL it stops smoking, then immediately change your oil.

I didn't read any of that on the can label.

Sorry. I'm not buying this crap either... 1/2 cup and a week later it's burning oil... One again the old BS flag is thrown.

What are you going to show with a picture... ?
