I may be purchasing a 110k mile 3.4L engine tomorrow for my 04 taco from a private seller, is there a vin# on the engine? I want to confirm the year, make and model of the donor vehicle. Seller claims it's out of a 04 taco 4x4. He purchased the engine used for his taco but then sold his truck.

I swapped my engine out, but I never noticed a vin on it, only the 5vz stamp on the back of the valve cover. Were you the guy who got a taco with a blown engine for wicked cheap?

Yea that's me. It was supposed to be my winter project, now it's my spring project, time flies. So i'm guessing there is no vin on the engine block to verify year and to run a carfax to get a idea of it's last recorded mileage. Seller claims 110k. He is asking $900.00 and he wants it out of his garage so he said to make a offer. It's complete minus the alt., ac, and p.s. pump. I'm looking at it today after work. Thanks for the replies.

I find it hard to believe there's not a vin on the block.

This link seems to suggest that there are vins stamped on the block.

There is an ID number stamped near the oil filter, but I haven't found a source to decode it. You may want to write that number down and contact a dealer to find out what it is.

I bought the 3.4L saturday. The craigslist ad stated that it was from a junkyard and that he never removed it from the shipping pallet. He wanted $900.00 obo. I knew as soon as i looked it over that this guy was a BS'er and i told him that it was'nt a junkyard motor. No heat tabs or writing on the block or heads. I'm sure that he did a engine swap then attached the junkyard ID tag on the old motor and he had the motor mounted to the pallet with ratchet straps. I got it for $200.00, not to bad if i can use the heads. The only #'s i could find was the ones tacoma04 mentioned near the oil filter, #1759391. I called my local toyo dealer but the parts woman was'nt much help. How can i verify the year?

I will tacomataco2. I just have to figure out what route to go, rebuild one engine from the two or save up some more $$$ and just order a reman from jasper. Here's a pic of my $500.00 project truck and why i need a motor, cyl. heads are toast.

I have never tried this with Toyota, but I have a Mazda I wanted to id and called the Mazda USA customer support and gave them the numbers and they were quite helpful. It took them a little time to look the numbers up, but they really wanted to figure it out and were very nice.

Don't know about Toyota, but it may be worth a shot.

I am unsure if the image you posted of a sticker with a VIN is from your truck or the "junkyard" engine.

I looked up the VIN on toyotaowners.com and it says:
2004 Tacoma that had its frame replaced in Clinton NJ...
There are more records that show up if you are interested.

Thanks. Jason that vin on the tag is from the $200 craigslist motor. I purchased another motor from a Arizona salvage yard with 69k miles. She's been running like a champ. Just returned today from a 1200 mile camping trip and right after i got her running this past march i drove her almost 3300 miles in just 6 days. I have 2 extra 3.4's sitting at work now, lol. Thanks again for the info.
