Something wrong with sub

Well, the story is... My 760 watt amp and two 10"s were professionally installed and never had any trouble with them. 2 months later I replaced the two 10"s with a 15" sub. The 15" worked well for a couple weeks...

Then it quit working all together. I have checked all the wires (including inside the actual box), fuses, and the amp light turns on. And everything looks alright.

So I have no idea what else to check. Is there anything else I am missing to check? Or anything I need to do to get it working again?

 

Is the amp working fine? One day my sub stopped working all of a sudden. It ended up being that the power cable came loose (where it connects the the amp)

 

also check the amps fuses if it has them if done professionaly you might want to check the fuse they should have put in by the trucks battery but if the lights turn on for the amp then check all connections to speakers inside the box they might have cam off

 

I hear ya, but yeah I have checked all of the wires connecting to the amp, the stuff connected to the battery, and the wire that is connected to the fuse box.

 

if you push down *gently* on the cone of the sub, do you feel any resistance? sometimes if it feels scratchy you have a blown sub and would want to check it with a multimeter

 

The fuses in the amp look good, and I will check the wires inside the box again and check everything else again tomorrow too. Just to make sure, but I have done all this stuff several times in the last couple of weeks and nothing looks out of place or bad.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the cone of the sub? And I thought the way you know it is blown is if it has a distinct smell

 

Yup, right now I am 100% sure. But I can definitely check again in the morning

 

the CONE is the part of the sub that moves when it's playing.


Not so sure about the smell technique of how to tell a sub is bad though...


When you move the cone, it may or may not try to play. If it's not smooth in movement, it might be a bad sub.

Grab any speaker and hook it up to the amp...you don't need to turn it up, just checking to see if it's sending signal to the speaker. You are just trying to eliminate the amp.

 

True true, I will have to try hooking up a different speaker to the amp then cause that's a good idea

 

smelling a speaker with the burning smell doesn't necessarily mean that its blown. sometimes after getting a new speaker or getting one reconed you will smell the excess glue. yeah, there is quite a distinct smell, but better safe than sorry.

if it makes you feel any better, the rca outputs on my head unit are bad and my speakers pop because of the signal interrupts

 

You can also use a AA or 9v battery. Hook it up to the speaker wire leads going into the speaker and see if the cone moves that way. Also a great way to check to make sure the polarity of the speakers are correct (sometimes the factory has them backwards).

Did you test the sub with a 9V battery to see if it made any audible sound?

Also, each of the terminals that you connect the speaker wires to have what is called a "tinsel lead" that runs from the terminal to the center of the sub. Are the tinsel leads still connected to the terminals? Sometimes these can break off or disconnect.

 

wow. didnt figure you would give up and quit just cause it aint werkin right!!!!!! troubleshoot it some and figure it out!
