DIY: Secondary Air Filter Removal

This post was an awesome find. I just dropped in an AFE and was trying to pull out the secondary and cracked it. My intent was to check it, clean it if possible, or replace it. This post saved me some grief because tomorrow I will take the secondary out. Nice and Thanks!

 

If you take out this secondary fixed filter which looks like it rest directly against the main resusable filter seems like the main filter may get loose because the secondary filter isn't applying pressure to it. On a bumpy road it may move around and crap my by pass through the side.

I'd like to try this mod but it seems like to many risks for little gain.

What info do We have on winter gas?

It plays a part in poor fuel milage?
And is it not true that 87 octane has more energy than 91 octane with ethonal?

Right now I've got 200 lbs of sand for winter weight and low tire pressure for traction. So...Its a bad time to make good gas milage.

I do have a winter-front on the grille to keep the engine at running temps. If i knew that i could get a block heater that would work in my 2010 4.0L I'd buy one. I get mixed reviews on block-heaters.

 

87 vs 91 makes no difference in the BTU content.
Ethanol does reduce BTU content, so yes, "pure" 87 (if you can get it) has more energy and will deliver better fuel economy than ethanol-contaminated 91.

I paid $4.18 last night.
It was $3.56 Christmas... lowest it had been in a while, and it's been slowly working up since then.

 

im considering removing the sec air filter on my 09 2.7 taco can somebody please illustrate or point out where ths "6 rivets" are on the saf so i can dril em out. my eyesight aint like it use to be. thanks muchachos.

 

It's more difficult not being able to find the rivets. They stick out around the edge of the filter. You should be able to find them with your eyes closed. Take a look.

 

They aren't really rivets... they're just pins that stick through the sec filter and they are melted down with a hot iron tip.

I don't think you have one, but it doesn't work for 2nd generation either.

My '03 Tundra 4.7 had one.
Didn't do anything for it either... dunno why I did my 2.7. All I need is some anal-retentive smog tech and it'll cost me $300.

That's even more worthless than putting a K&N sticker on your fender.

 

About the MAF Screen... It corrects the flow of air into the MAf..? My GF has a 04 Subaru Forrester XT 2.5 It has a Denso MAF that has no screen and the engine has a turbo..
The subie maf part number is 197-6040
2010 Tacoma maf part number is

Any ideas or info on this?
I'm wondering if it would work to take the screen off.
Part numbers are not the same but the shape of the MAf is the same.

mine is a TRD do i have the same airbox as the later TRD's?

No it really doesn't work for the 2.7L.

 

DO you know if removing the secondary filter voids the manufactueres warranty???

 

No it doesn't, but it is rather pointless, and in many states you could fail emissions.
