Which AIR Filter Do You Use?

Mine is dirty by the time I change my oil. Stock.

 

Drop in AFE Pro Dry , better response on the pedal and little more engine Rawrr.
Over 6 months and it still works like a champ.

 

been using a k&n for a while now but i think with all the dust and debris down here in az i am gonna switch back to stock or an AFE pro dry......

 

Any pics of this setup on the truck???

 

Those things flow well, but filter like crap.

 

Actually those foam filters stop more than you think, the air has to travel through a longer "maze" than in the fabric style ones. And ideally you would want a 2 stage foam filter that is oiled (at least oil the 2nd stage), one that has a course outside layer and a finer inside section. But quite a lot of work to keep clean, which means it is working!

But still better than a standard K&N, I prefer foam filters to the fabric type. They filter far better, notice you cant see the sun through a foam filter, yet on most fabric ones there are HUGE gaps. The dry AFE ones seem to have a pretty good mesh unlike the K&N ones, but still have large openings compared to a stock OEM filter.

There is a reason off road motorcycles use FOAM filters, cause they work. Riding in dust behind another ride is about as bad as it gets (or vehicle).

The best filtration one will get is using an oiled foam filter, however they require constant cleaning and re oiling, otherwise they start to restrict rather quickly.

However I dont really see anything like that for automotive applications, only off-road stuff. Probably due to the amount of maintenance required. They filter great, but clog really fast, on the other hand you have the fabric filters, they require much less maintenance (compared to a foam oiled filter) however generally let through way too much debris.

Is is what it is, in most cases flow comes at the expense of filtration, for off road the stock ones are going to filter better than the aftermarket ones. But I am not saying anything most people already didnt know. Beating the dead horse from a different end, lol...

If you could see what gets sucked into your motor during off-roading using a K&N filter you would be horrified! Its kinds like slowly boring your cylinders out as you drive...

I recently had to to a top end on a quad that the customer put a fabric type oiled filter on thinking it would increase flow, and well, it did, along with the dust/dirt/silt injection into the motor destroying the valves, which ruined the valve seats, and also scuffing the crap out of the cylinder wall and piston skirts as well as killing the rings, boy that was an expensive increase in flow, lol. So just sayin that those fabric ones kinds suck in the dust/dirt, but they do flow great!

Just giving my first hand experience in the matter, better flow almost always equals more dirt into the motor (not always but probably better than 90% of the time unless you have a really good filter system which most people dont.

 

What's your take on Donaldson's PowerCore filters from Volant? I Currently have a Pro 5 filter, but thinking of dropping the coin for the PowerCore.

And shapes. They also sell foam sleeves that go over k&n filters

Was going to buy K&N, will save my money.

 

Those are excellent filters. Factory equipment on the '06 and newer Duramax.
They aren't cheap, but they last a long time.

My dad ran an oiled foam wrap over an OEM style filter on his '74 Blazer when we went offroad.

He'd pull the air cleaner lid, wrap the paper filter, then replace it with a lid that he made that was open (only covered the filter, didn't force the air to come from the snorkel).
Before we'd leave to head home, he'd remove the foam and put the stock lid back on the filter housing.

 

A clean one.

Not exactly.

Stock has a 33% plurality. K&N is the next highest at 30%.

But that's still 67% that are not using stock.

I drive it on the beach alot, surf fishing...Sand is a worry...hence it gets changed every 10k

 

I'd worry more about the fine dust in the desert than the sand at the beach.
That's just going to fall out of the filter element into the bottom of the airbox... fairly coarse grit.

Offroad driving is hell on air filters.
