To follow up, went camping this past weekend with lows down to 27 (wind chill down to 13) and was nice and warm each night.

I added a cheap ~1/2" foam sleeping pad between the cot (which is just stretched fabric) and sleeping bag, Wigwam Thermax sock liners with Wigwam Canada wool socks (their warmest according to their site), and also wore some "insulated" track/wind pants I had (not sure exactly what they're called) instead of way too big fleece pants I had used before. Also threw one of the cheap lightweight sleeping bags I use in the summer on top as a blanket.

Like I said, I was nice and warm including my feet and feel comfortable with going much colder now.

Big Agnes makes a decent bag from my understanding, never used their products though. I do a decent amount of backpacking and reading of reviews and I tend to stick with Mountain Hardwear or Marmot. The MH Lamina and Super Lamina series in the women's bags are supposed to be pretty decent, supposedly they give a lot of attention to the chest and feet areas. Worth checking out maybe.

Also, when you're trying to decide on equipment and things, this site may help you out www.trailspace.com, and www.backpacker.com has forums talking about equipment that some very experienced campers and hikers frequent and it helps me make decisions from time to time ;)

 The Mountain Hardwear look nice but they don't have anything in that temperature range. I was at REI this last weekend and was looking at the Marmot Trestles 15 (synthetic fill) and Teton 15 (down fill). Kinda leaning towards the Trestles now...

I have a Trestles 30*, haven't used it yet though, got it for a killer deal on www.sierratradingpost.com... I plan to use it at a Tacoma meet in the mountains the 16th and 17th, I'll let you know what I think, although it should differ a little from the women's version.

Well REI doesn't seem to carry those...and this will be my member dividend purchase so I gotta go with what they have.

I don't think I've posted in this thread before. I love to backpack when possible, and fortunately I got to go out with a couple buddies this weekend in Anza-Borrego.

I left the Tacoma at the end of a spur road.

My buddies and I wandered 1,300' up to the summit of an island mountain in the desert.

We pitched our tents between these wonderful pinyon pines which did a superb job of protecting us from the constant wind at night.

A few views from the summit. Looking North to the Santa Rosa Mountains, which I love.

Bloom has not started where we were (Pinyon Mountain Area), and I saw nothing at the lower elevations either. Oddly enough, were were patches of snow from the last storm on the North side of the peak we were hiking. It was virtually gone the next morning though.

Question for you, the picture quoted below, is that Borrego Palm Canyon campground? I've dayhiked out of there many times, but never camped there, but I was considering it for an upcoming family camp trip. :)

    I miss campfires... :pout:

And thanks to the stupid budget sequestration Yellowstone is opening later than normal. Pretty small inconvenience in the grand scheme of things but I look forward to my opening day trip all winter long! Now I have to keep waiting....

(maybe at the $100 to 150$ range) mostly do one maybe 2 nights. for a little bit. want to work and to a 3 night or so on the Appalachian trail. (maybe just from GA to part of TN or something idk yet. it’s just an idea. don’t want to do the hole thing anytime soon. I’m not very far from part of the trail at all. 2h driver or so.

What kind of weight range are you planning to carry? A backpack with a good suspension system makes a huge difference. Would be worth the higher costs IMO.

At the moment I use an Osprey Talon 44, for my overnight and 2 night trips. I could probably stretch it for 3-4 nights if I didn't eat like a pig.

If money were no object, I'd get a Kifaru KU3700 for the job.
