I have a question regarding Lenses and F-stop ratings. Take a "55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G" for example. Does the 4.5-5.6 rating mean that that is the maximum aperture range for that lens for each of its focal lengths? Or does it mean that at 55mm it can have a maximum aperture of 4.5 and at 300 have a maximum aperture of 5.6. I'm confused on this.

Also, I see some lenses have a fixed f stop rating such as "24-70mm f/2.8G." Does that mean like I said before, where 2.8 is the maximum aperture at each of its focal lengths, or maybe its the ideal setting for lighting for that particular lens?

    Please explain.

The first is what you said, bolded.
The other can max at 2.8 all the way across the range of zoom.

Yes you are correct about the Variable range, @55mm your max would be f4.5, and @300 F5.6 So as you zoom, your max will change.

also correct about Fixed, I have the 70-200 F2.8 so at any given zoom I can set the Max F to 2.8

In your first example, it means that at 55mm, the maximum aperture is f/4.5 and at 300mm, it's f/5.6. For focal lengths in between, it will be somewhere in that range.

For your second example, f/2.8 is the max at all focal lengths.

Generally speaking, the 55-300 will be less expensive than it's fixed stop equal.

You will be happy with the D7000. I love mine and see no reason to upgrade to the D7100.

Centered and unnecessary dead space. I think seeing the road would have made a much better background as it gives context to the photo

I'm not a fan of the composition, I would have shot it from an upward angle. The bright helmet is distracting in the photo

    and the colors look muted

I like the placement and angle of the strobes in these. I think I would have turned the strobe down a little in the second for my taste though. I also like the first and last pics in your other post. Nice work!

The bright helmet draws your attention away from the subject (It's the first thing you notice). I agree with Tony on the composition and the colors looking muted.

you guys dont like the dead space? i figured it may give it something extra not being so cropped in on him. thanks for the input.
i thought the road was a bit distracting..i have a few with the road in the background as well. ya you guys are right the colors are a bit muted. kinda weird cause when i was editing it they were decently bright. guess my monitor needs to be calibrated again.

I think it would look good with a wide open road with nothing around but the subject. Kinda that out in the middle of no where, open road kinda thing.

I like the expression and pose you've got going.

You've got a nice location too. You could include more of it without taking away from your subject. If you move the bike to the right a bit and open up a bit, I think you'll get a nice picture that includes some of the background too.

I hope you don't mind. I edited this to show you how some fill light will help the overall exposure of the image.
