Well I've been deployed twice to Iraq and carried many guns loaded, shot many. I just have mine under the seat. If I have time to get it out from under I will have time to pull that slide back I bet you that. I just choose not to keep it loaded all time. If I go somewhere I'm not comfortable I will load and carry. But I mostly leave under my seat.

And if somebody for some reason somehow got to it, less likely someone will get shot by accident.

I'd like to see more reasoning from that side of the coin as well

if the assailant already has the gun pointed at you, i've got bad news...

you're not gonna be able to pull your gun, aim, and fire before he pulls his/her finger back half an inch.

This is something that people frequently forget... but where I am going is not related to "one in the pipe"

Some people buy a gun with a ported barrel because they believe it will make followup shots more accurate.
That is true, shooting at paper or cans, with a traditional stance.

Now picture the more typical defensive firing position.

Stand up. Rotate your body 45 degrees away from your keyboard (strong side away).
Hold your weak hand/arm up as if fending off an attacker. Hold your strong arm in a natural firing position, in a way that protects the weapon from being grabbed by the attacker.

Now look down at where your strong side hand is.
Where is the flash, residue, and gas from that ported barrel going to end up? Yup... if you're lucky, the bottom of your jaw. More likely, in your "strong side" eye.

Not true at all. Just had one here in VA Beach a couple months ago like that - Dude was walking down the road, some guy came out of the bushes, stuck a gun in his face and demanded all his shit. He was carrying IWB SOB and reached back like he was getting his wallet, pulled his pistol and smoked the guy. While the other guy was pointing a gun at him.

Ya. It's true that it can be done but...why would you bet your life on that?

Yeah definitely. I wasn't saying it's not risky, just merely that it is indeed possible and does happen. The last thing the BG expects is for you to pull a pistol so.. that guy got lucky and walked away from the situation.

very risky. i'd rather give up my wallet than possibly start a gun fight. but props to that guy for the balls to pull his gun and for doing so successfully!

That depends on whether you think he's going to walk away with your wallet or just shoot you anyways. I'm not sure I like my chances either way. Situational awareness is key.

I voted in the poll (I carry loaded) and haven't read the other posts. What I found interesting (and probably irrelevant) is that the ratio of Yes to No in this poll is very close the the ratio in the poll asking whether you shift to 4WD on the fly or stop first to shift. I wonder if the folks who voted to stop are those who carry with an empty chamber.

that's actually very interesting. the answers to both reveal a lot about somebody's concern for safety, or what they believe is safety. good thinking

    I chose no.

I practice at my range with my Glock 19 religiously and not just shooting, but shoot+reload, clear jams, etc and racking to load a round is 2nd nature and quick enough for me to outweigh the added risk of accidentally firing off a round drawing from an awkward position like seated in a car.

I see the argument for carrying chambered in case of a 1-hand situation and that might be feasable for me if I carried my Kimber with the dual-safety but not my glock.

Could be people don't like being called a "fool" when they've made a decision based on considerations that are relevant to them. Also probably tired of 20 somethings telling us old farts we shouldn't be allowed to carry without one in the chamber when they don't have the experience to make such a statement in the first place.

My decision not to carry a chambered round is based on the way I was initially trained and two particular experiences in my life. Knowing I do not have a round chambered I practice charging the weapon when I draw to where it is second nature and very fast. My rear sight on my Glock 23 is an aftermarket sight with a boot cut that enables me to charge the weapon on a belt or even a bunched up shirt if the other hand is injured or occupied. I practice doing this emergency charging method with either hand (without a loaded magazine since it is much more likely to result in a negligent discharge!).

    YMMV
