    Eric, I want the stronger of the two and selected steel. But the aluminum one is thicker. Which one would you think is stronger, as to a bending force if something heavy is on the tailgate when it is down?

    I would still say the steel is stronger since aluminum tends to be softer. For the application, I doubt you'd really ever bend either of them. At the point you'd bend both the reinforcement and the tailgate there would probably be some other failure whether it is the support cables, or where the cables attach, or even the lower pivots of the tailgate. :cool:
