That's exactly why I hope this whole Chrysler diesel thing works out. It'll force other manufacturers to compete with it. If it flops, nothing will change.

True but generally on the big truck motors.
I drove the new Cayenne 3.0L V6 in LA and got 41 mpg(in a Cayenne that's BIG MPG!)

I have owned two diesel trucks both Dodges, one a 3500 and one 2500, both were pre 2002 models. IME the EPA has destroyed the diesel market in larger vehicles. The new diesels in trucks do not get what the old diesels got mileage wise and most of it is a result of emissions components that kill the mileage. The other huge factor is Diesel averages anywhere from $.40 to $.80 more a gallon than gas. Add in the additional maintenance costs and the higher price at purchase time and its just a no brainer to me in owning diesel's in this day and age. They will probably screw up the diesel's fuel economy by the time the EPA is done phucking with em anyway. It would be great if Toyota could come out with a Diesel that performed like the ones overseas do both in power and economy but I have grave doubts that our govt wont mess up a good thing post import. The Dodge 1500 with a diesel will be the true test in the future of diesels in smaller truck applications but based on what I have seen happen to Ford,GM and Dodge regarding diesels and emissions I don't have my hopes up just yet.

My dealer told me that my window track repair would not be covered since I had removed the door panel myself. When I asked to talk to the district rep it was suddenly covered!

I learned my lesson about Just Empty Every Pocket when I bought my 2012 JK 2-door. If you plan on getting a diesel JK and doing anything to it take out a home equity line you will need it. Hell, even the tires are going to be more expensive when you tell them it's a diesel. LOL.

Again, you're comparing a small displacement diesel with your experiences with heavy haulers... They are not the same. As far as the MPG claims, my dad has a new Chevy diesel, 4x4, 3/4 ton extended cab and will get 22-23 MPG unloaded. The Ford's diesel MPG went in the toilet when they redesigned, not sure about Dodge's current diesel but the Chevy is still up there.

You're also forgetting that there are already diesel options available in quite a few SUVs. The gubment didn't phuck them into submission. The diesels in the US in this market is not new, just new to this particular line up.

I agree diesel is a better alternative to the crappy ethanol watered down gas we use these days. Especially when it comes to small engines you can't buy a lawnmower from home depot and expect it to run for more than 1 season without having to clean the carb out. It's pretty pathetic. And I still say that if big trucks stopped driving for just 1 hour across the nation it would bring the diesel market to it's knees so they would start actually charging less for it than gas considering it's cheaper to make. <end rant>

The 3.0 D4-D makes that torque at ~1800 RPMS, the 4.0 makes peak torque at much higher RPMs, nearly double that IIRC. This is where longevity of the engine and efficiency come from, they are just not having to work as hard as a gas motor.

Oh I know a few guys claim to get 20+ mpg out of their 3/4 tons but that's not the majority. I know several guys that have newer diesel Fords, Dodges and GM's and they are getting 17 as opposed to 22-23. I am well aware of Audi,VW and Porsche running the CTD type engines, but why they aren't in the smaller truck applications and haven't been is a mystery to me. For gods sake how many years have the VW's been running diesels here in the states??? Theres other factors at stake here than just supply and demand. When we bought my wifes RX350 a few years back we looked at the Audi suv's and in the end didn't go the Audi route but the numbers were impressive on their diesels.

I don't need to tow, I just like huge torque(what a Jeep should have) and great mpg.
The non TRUCK diesels weigh about 50-80 lbs more than their gas counterparts.
Once you own a good Clean Diesel you would be amazed. A Much quieter engine than the V6 in my Tacoma as well

Sounds like you got off cheap. Only $6,000? How did you manage that

I think what he means by "huge torque" is a good low-end. You are correct that there is not a huge gain, but the powerband is alot different and if he plans on crawling around having the power in the low end might be more appealing, although just putting anything into 4-Lo will create a very usable low-end.
