Having owned a JK series Wrangler (2009 2dr Rubi), I have to say based on what you state here, the Wrangler isn't for you. Squeaks and creaks come with the Wrangler brand. Road noise is part of the charm. And refinement is minimal at best and mostly just nicer solid feeling plastic. It's all part of the "character" of the Wrangler. So many people bought them when the JK came out (2007+) because they thought it was just another SUV, and so many of them ended up on the used market because people didn't know what they were getting into. And none of that factors in a higher price tag for a diesel setup.

Right now, a 4dr Rubicon with no options stickers for $34K. Add in the 4-5K premium for the diesel and you're talking damn near $40K for what most would call an unrefined off road vehicle that also happens to be able to get you to and from work.

Exactly. If you want to invest some serious money in a seriously capable rock crawling off-road monster that's loud, crude and uncomfortable on the road, get a wrangler.

OP, I think you may actually like a Honda Ridgeline better, unless you need the major offroad ability of the wrangler.

Rigid SR 20" LED Light bar, Pelfreybuilt Front Plate Bumper Ordered. Looking at Rear Plate Bumpers now.
    Thanks for your opinion.
I have rented Jeeps on summer vacations in Hawaii for the last 15+ years so I do know what I am getting into. It is just an entirely different type of vehicle.
I will have the soft top side panels removed most all year and install the pipe and mesh doors for the summer.
If you go to "poison spider jeep" you can check out all of the shit I will do to it, and I will do it all. I'll get a no option soft top with roll up windows.

Poison spyder stuff is nice but omg it's pricey. I bought the cheapest part they make "tramp stamp" for the tailgate of my 2012 JK and it was like 50$...

To each his own man but my 2c is my cousin's $5,000 98 tacoma did everything my $30,000 jk did and he didnt have to make a $400/mo payment like me. and mine was no more comfortable to drive than his, just a little bit shinier. This is the main reason I sold my Jeep and bought my '03 Taco 3 weeks ago. Never looked back.

So you dont like it's looks and celebrating your perception that they suck? Hmmm.. I think others had it right.. You are super-picky. Maybe you just enjoy complaining? Some people can't be happy unless they can gripe about something.

Yeah, I priced out the 2013 Wranglers and your pricing for the Rubicon is about right. They are fairly quiet (with the hard top, soft top, no). They're still shaky with emergency lane changes at highway speeds, even the 4-door. I put the 4-door through a test yanking the steering wheel back and forth at 65mph, and it was not a solid experience, it hopped and swayed way too much, brought a little sweat out on me. The Taco passes that test much, much more smoothly.

What is there to figure out? The Ridgeline can tow up to 5000 pounds (Tacoma 3500) has a payload of 1537 pounds (Tacoma 1235). It has 250hp (Tacoma 236) with comparable mpgs. It is more comfortable and handles (on road) better than any truck in its class. It's not great off road, but VERY few truck owners actually go off road. I think they did a pretty good job with some great innovations.

As far as looks. Face it, neiter Tacomas or Jeeps are much to look at,

i have owned alot of jeep wranglers...i had a 07 wrangler jk rubicon that i traded for my taco...i would wait for the new engine bugs to get fixed on the new engine before purchasing it the first year run..when i bought my 97 tj wrangler as a new platform i knew i wasn't taking a chance due to the 4.0 inline had been tried and true..but when i bought the 07 jk rubicon, well that was another story, the 3.8l was a total crap chute...it wasted oil..and the manual said it would...even with a supercharger it had no power..the dana 44 axles were bending and we dont have any rock out here to crawl..i was just using it at the beach and in the dunes and mud..becareful...
i love my taco..it has its problems ,but it has power,it gets me in and out of places..and i can seat 5...with a bed...the only jeep i have now is my old 95 cherokee xj with 350,000 miles my son still drives it to college..jeep should have kept that 4.0 it is a work horse...

And then there's Death Wobble. Rarer on the JKs, but still happens. That'll pucker you right up.

    Here is a comparison test:

    http://special-reports.pickuptrucks.com/2012/01/2012-midsize-shootout-track-day.html

The Ridgeline got some good reviews and as you said ON ROAD it was superb. Pretty interesting, I wouldn't have thought a Honda truck would be that impressive, but it was.

I had nearly the exact same experience! VW passatt in Germany. 1300km to the tank, even on the autobahn!
Shameful that NA has such backwards thinking.

"I rented a jeep, so I know what I am in for."

Wow. Ok. So you drive what is more or less a brand new vehicle for a week and that makes it an experience? All new cars a great when they are new, even the Dodge Dart (might as well call that a Neon). Especially cars you turn in and forget about. Did you also stay at a Holiday Inn last night?

I know a few brand new purchase Jeep owners and they keep their service writers on speed dial. For a reason. That engine might be great(might not be). The bolt ons a fun time no doubt, but damn, the vehicle itself is a POS. Period. No exceptions. Tons of seriously stupid issues Chrysler won't stand behind. In Upstate NY, Chrysler products rust years before GM/Ford/Toyotas. Mainly Rams, Jeeps and things with alot of sheet metal that see chips. More proof for us up here their products simply suck.

Good luck. This sound simply like a case of being the first one to have a novelty product. 450lbft in a Wrangler will be problem central.

    Enjoy... You'll be back.

Kudos to someone picking up a beautiful Tacoma here.
