I'm curious to know how far you can ride once the low fuel light has come on?

Toyota says the tank holds 21 gal, but even with the light on I can only put 18 or 19 in max. So I figure you have 20-40 miles with the light on. I just don't feel like testing it out.

Fwiw the fuel pump uses the fuel in the tank to keep it cool... running below 1/4 tank frequently can cause it to burn out pre-maturley

I never keep my truck below half a tank, just incase. ;) Also, the psychological part of keeping it above half a tank is that it feels like you're not emptying your wallet on one fillup. :D

I think it only has three gallons left when the light comes on. So however far you think you can get with three gallons. But i'm not testing it out. :D

Really I had no idea I hate getting gas and only go when I have to but now I might have to make myself go and fill up. Thankks for that info.

i would say about 40 miles till your truck turns off. Which for fuel injected engines is TERRIBLE. it will mess up your engine if your truck just shuts off with no more gas

Next time the light comes on, fill up your tank. If you put in 17 gal. in then you know that when the light comes on you still have 4 gal. in there.

that should give you an idea on how far you can go.

I have an auto trans, one time the light came on at 330 miles and I kept driving to 400 miles. Usually it comes on between 300 and 330 and I fill up at 340.

I'd say at most I'd only go 30-40 (I'll do 25 when it hits but I still don't like it). If you get stuck in traffic or gotta go up some mad inclines and such.... eh why risk it. You don't want to be that moron on the side of the road that forgot to fill up.

I'd say about 60 highway miles unloaded. I average about 20mpg and normally have about 3 gallons left when the light goes on. I've never pushed it beyond 30 miles.

I bought my truck new in Idaho and drove it home to NJ. Let me tell you, when that light comes on crossing Wyoming, you panic because you might not see another exit with gas for 30-40 miles. I know from expereince!

    Yes

It's funny....but the 2nd gen light comes on far before the needle reaches the Empty line.

On the 1st gens (from what I remember on my old truck), the light came on almost when it was ONTOP the Empty line. I remember driving until the needle was like 1/8" below the empty line.

4.0 gal left when low fuel light comes on.... I've checked it out several times... I usually get 20 MPG so I have a range of 80 miles when the light comes on...
