Hmmm... That video was interesting. haha. I don't think I would use that to argue the skinny vs wide debate though, because we don't know many of the factors. First they based contact surface off of the rating and not the actual measurement. My tires are rated at 10" wide but only have a 7" wide tread pattern. Secondly the psi in the skinny tires was much higher (at least they seemed to imply it was) than the street tires, so the skinny tires are automatically going to have a smaller contact pattern on the ground causing the low traction situation that put them in.

I'm pretty confident that if you match vehicle weight and psi in both situations and then compare skinny to wide, you will find that skinny tires will provide more lateral traction and wide tires will provide more forward traction.

If you are having issues with lateral traction, either add more weight, let some air out, or do both.

The only think I can think of, is that they run those wider tires so they can race at lower psi's in general without flexing out the tire. A lower psi will give them a better contact patch with the road and should result in better traction. Same reason why we drop our psi to offroad, but we can offroad with flexed tires. I imagine racing on flexed tires could result in throwing a bead easier or allow the car to shift on the sidewall while cornering.

 

Im new to the forum and a first time Taco owner. I've had my truck about 2 weeks and looking to get started building and modifying my truck. Money is a huge issue so if any one has and good ideas and sources to help out it would be appreciated.
