I made a big point of that (even though it wasn't directly brought up) because you would be surprised how many people have no idea how 4wd really works and truly do think that it is an invincibility switch.

Snow conditions change, and that has an effect on exactly how you'd drive on the snow. 4x4 is preferable any time the road is covered. Sure I slow down, but why would I not use a feature I paid for on conditions it's made for?
The extra weight helps me in the snow. If I'm going to go off the road, id like as much control of where I'm going to land as I can.

Its really very simple, the highest probability of losing control of a rear wheel drive vehicle on straight wintery roads is the ass end slipping out to one side or another. Front wheel drive cars do not experience this and can be way easier to control on slick roads. AWD is even better especially if its activated by slip as needed. 4wd is not magic , it only helps you keep your ass end underneath you should traction at the drive wheels begin to slip. No way in hell would I advise someone to take their vehicle out of 4wd on winter roads and advise them to only use it when stopping or at take off, theres no sense to that logic unless something deep rooted in you thinks its bad to drive around in 4wd, which I can assure its not.

This whole debate, or at least my side of it applies almost exclusively to driving on plowed flat roads that are still ice/snow covered.
    Kind of like this:

If I am offroading or there is an inch or more of snow on the road, then hell yeah I am using 4wd. Deep snow will cause drag on your front tires and just asks for your rear end to swing out from under you if you are in a RWD.

2wd will do just fine in that so long as you are moving. Now if you are stopped, then yeah you may have some trouble getting going again in 2wd.

Best thing to do is to find a nice big empty icy/snowy parking lot and test the handling and feel of your vehicle in said conditions. Reading through this thread is like watching a sensei teach without sparring.

Brakes work better than 4wd for stopping and slowing down, and I just use my LSD to get going again anymore, works pretty well most of the time.

Avoidance maneuvers in snowy/icy conditions... well unless you see it coming from a ways, you are probably fucked either way. You'll either dodge and end up in the ditch from the maneuver or maneuver carefully and but not be fast enough to get out of the way.

And during the maneuver 4wd may just cause understeer and not help you dodge anyway:p

I do this quite frequently for fun actually. I get off work at 10pm and usually have a nice parking lot to play in on my way home. All the snow has melted and spring is on it's way now though I think...

Yes, I know that. You're previous statement seemed to imply that you would be using 4wd to slow down, stop, and perform avoidance maneuvers. I will use brakes to stop and slow down rather than 4wd.

I use 4x4 all the time on the highway if it is snowy or icy, ass end of the tacoma can come around real quick in 2wd if your not paying attention.

4x4 helps in town as well as you can accelerate to avoid an incident instead of sitting in an intersection spinning tires.

There is probably a reason you can't buy a pre runner in canada
