Aww c'mon, that was entertaining. It's fun watching somebody get so buried with logic but keep arguing, they think the only way out is to stick with it and go down with the ship.

That's a perfect road for 4HI. In 2WD yes, you can go straight just fine. But in the event of a needed turn in 2WD your tires will become sleds along for the ride. In 4HI your tires will keep spinning the way they are pointing and help keep you straight or help you complete the maneuver.

    You can't argue that.

    Wow, this is still going?

Yes, you have to assume the understeer is fwd, and oversteer is rwd because of their definitions.

BTW, just cause I grew up in Hawaii doesn't mean I have no snow experience. I know I'm not the best winter driver, but I do know how to handle it. My father lives in Oregon. I used to go there a few times a year for snowboarding and hanging out with my pops. I was also there a few years ago when they had all the record snow with all buildings collapsing. We had to shovel snow off his roof everyday. Not much of a vacation!
I know what its like to put on and take off chains in slush. He has a 4x4 diesel excursion. The thing is a monster! but fun to drive in the snow :D

I ? ................ Give up also OZ. it's a dead thread now. I would like to think that common sence is common, but most of the time it's not so common. :D I completely agree, you know what I mean. ;)

Wtheck, this thread was done after the first response. lol..

I'll admit however I was a total 4x4 no-nothing-complete-tard when I got my taco a few weeks ago. I have always wanted and never had a 4x4 so during a MASSIVE southern california rain storm (moderate rain for about 20 minutes) I switched to 4H. Dumb move.. way too much traction on 4 brand new tires.. started binding in turns so I put it back to 2WD. I'm really glad I had joined TW or I might not have known as quickly that was a bad thing to do.

^ this debate here about using 2wd in the snow is better and all that crap, steering is better, braking etc. 4x4 sucks in the snow? What?

Don't even try to talk to Canadians about snow experience. I have some friends up in Calgary and I just take pictures of BBQ'ing the Christmas Turkey in my shorts and T-shirt every year. I lived in Erie, PA which gets the WORST lake effect snow in the US and they came to visit during a massive snow storm one year and were like, "It's nice to get down somewhere warmer without a lot of snow this time of year!" ... ........
    ..... .......

    And they were serious.

America's hat gets a lot of snow.

Oh, sorry.. Uhh.. I would disagree with that. I think if you are driving around on snowy roads that have a high chance of icy parts 4H is better. With the truck in 2wd you are way more likely to spin out and lose it. Lets be honest, RWD in snow/ice with a light rear weight truck is the worst possible option right?

Back when I was in Erie, PA I would take long smoke brakes and watch the cars in the lowe's parking lot slip and slide into each other in the winter at the stop signs, then spin their tires trying to get going.. It was awesome.. like bumper cars.. you could tell who had the 2wd and the 4wd.

I would use both, there is a reduction in engine braking with 4wd especially 4 low. Even 4 hi. It doesn't have the reduction but it has the power to the front wheels if you need / to do so. Also it can help you keep traction on the road .

This is what I was talking about Oz

    Thanks

    Brett

Naw, my post was poorly quoted and not spoken right. I was trying to say that I disagreed with the other TW member saying 2wd was better in the snow and would handle and brake better than a rig in 4wd. We all and both know 4wd in the snow is the way to go. Sorry about the miss communication . Made me think for a second.;)

umm, I kinda admitted that I wasn't a good winter driver, I was just saying that I do have some experience with it.
I think driving up to Mt. Hood in the winter counts as a lot of snow...
I have a few friends in Alberta too.
Also, I have driven in snow in Hawaii, not many people can say the same

Lol, no it was my fault for not spending the time to read all the posts I missed to understand what was going on. I just read the last few and was surprised this was still going.

Fair enough, I wasn't being critical.. :) just saying that Canadians will never listen to us regardless of our experience level because we just can't compare. Different world up there and although I joke about them being "America's Hat" and all because they get riled up, they know 1000x more in general than we do about winter driving. That's why I just enjoy the good weather now and complain when it drops down into the 50's (F.. not that vile C temp crap..) so they know they should be jealous.

Also remember that they have more experience but the majority of their road systems are better prepared too. If you go to Colorado in winter you will see roads and crews that probably do just as well, but that certainly isn't typical of american roads in the snow.

That's the highway in interior Alaska with a 65mph speed limit. I wouldn't hesitate to run that the speed limit in 4wd with no questions asked. Try driving the Haul Road (ice road truckers show road) to Prudhoe for 500 miles of that with more ice pack on it. Done it many many times, guranteed you wouldn't make the first 50 miles without wrecking in 2wd unless of course you are driving 10-20 mph. You are a young fella and the only reason I chimed in here is because giving unsafe advice to people who are inexperienced at driving on winter roads or new to 4wd vehicles isn't a great idea.
