I have owned a Durango with 4 wheel drive. I had a saturn vue with AWD. My truck seems to do well in snow and mud. I have wrangler MT's and when I go to the mud and snow I usually have at least 300 pounds in the bed. I also have the sport so I have the LSD button which seems to help. When I go to the snow and they are requiring all 2 wheel drives to have chains sometimes I feel like I dont need them. If conditions are bad and I am sliping I am more than happy to put them on. But if the snow is not bad and the stock 4*4 infront of me with an empty bed and old stock highway tires gets to drive right through should I be able too? What are you guys thougts and opinions?

having those front tires hooked up to the driveline really helps with stopping in snow. Try downshifting a 2wd and you usually start fishtailing. I'd argue that a stock 4x4 is better in the snow.

4WD / FWD > RWD in snow generally. Of course, if they are using worn out street tires it's a different matter.

I do agree that the 4 wheel is better in the snow but I dont think it is better with stock tires. If your tires cant grip anything then your driveline doesnt matter.

I agree front wheel and 4 wheel are more ideal for the snow, but with stock tires Im not sure its better than my two wheel drive with weight in the bed and good tires.

I'd rather have four bad tires try to get traction then two. I've seen subarus in summer tires do decent work on unplowed roads. Cant say the same for anything with rwd only.
It's really how you drive though. Snow takes skill. Some people shouldn't drive in winter at all. In any car or truck.

I would rather have my stock 4WD truck than your 2WD with good tires.

What's the point of this thread again? bragging rights?

One night last winter I was driving home from work in the snow. It was just a few inches and I didn't think to put it in 4WD since I was not slipping. I had all season tires which were compatible to stock tires on my truck. I came to a traffic light which was on a hill that was red so I stopped. I was going up the hill. The light turned green and my rear tires were spinning and I wasn't moving. I put it into 4WD and the truck began moving forward without any wheel spin. If I didn't have the 4WD option, I would have been stuck. In my opinion, 4WD does make a difference in the snow with stock tires.

1.) if you could make that argument would you sleep better?

2.) 4x4 > 2WD in the snow, even with "stock" tires. Maybe not "street" tires or racing slicks, but the "stock" tires that come on a Taco are good enough to be better paired with 4x4 than a 2WD with mud terrains.

3.) I'm surprised no one has mentioned that mud terrains are no good in the ice/snow in comparison to something with siping like an AT. Your MTs aren't made for slippery conditions, nor is your rear wheel drive and still light bed even with 300lbs in it.

I have a 4wd and stock Bridgestone tires now, previously I had some very nice A/T tires that were excellant in the snow. I would argue that the stock Bridgestone Dueler H/T (which are still M+S rated) in 4wd is better than the really good snow tires in RWD. It just comes down to having to overcome the front tires plowing vs. driving. You might be better off than some 4wd or AWD vehicles if the owner has crappy tires but a stock truck with good tires I would say has you beat. We don't have checkpoints out here like that but if the idea is to keep people safe, I would hope they would hassle a 4wd vehicle with really shitty tires also at one of those checks.

Stock tires > MT on ice/snow in many instances.

Also, whether or not they let people through based on 4WD or 2WD is not a matter of "opinion" on if the vehicle can make it. It's a matter of legal liability, most likely. They have the rule, 4x4 or chain up, and they have to enforce it. If a prerunner with blizzaks, LSDs, and whatever else rolls up it's still not 4x4. Don't take it personal, it's a job for them.

I was just trying to see if the argument could be made. I should have bought 4*4 but I wanted the better MPGs at the time . I will load up the bed and put on chains till Im ready to buy a new truck in a few years. Thanks for the input and criticism.
