I have had a few diesels. I traded a 3L TDI touareg for my 13 toco. I do miss the 409 foot pounds of torque but will tell you that you need to consider the extra maintenance. 9 qts of oil, diesel exhaust fluid, extra cat to further clean the exhaust. And of course the extra you pay for the engine and the extra 40 or 50 cents a gallon for fuel. This all drives up cost per mile. My 3L TDI averaged 24 mpg. So far my 13 toco is averaging 20 mph and will be cheaper to drive per mile. I do agree about the torque but the other maintenance is too much.

    Just my 2 cents...

Are you surprised this thread turned to shit? I mean it's a thread combining Jeeps AND diesels... two topics that pretty much never result in a fruitful discussion

Just because you own a certain vehicle it doesn't mean you automatically have to hate everything else lol. I can say that there is no manufacturer I hate and would give any product a chance if it offered what Im looking for regardless of who makes it. Hell if Hyundai made a truck and I liked it I'd give it a fair shake down.

I have no allegiance to Toyota myself. I was all buy a coin flip away from getting an Xterra. Decided I wanted the truck bed so went with the Taco.

My thoughts exactly. I would NEVER buy any 1st year chrysler product, look at the new ram 1500 production issues. As for diesel in general, at one point it may have made sense to buy one, but have you seen diesel gas prices lately? In my area at least they are way higher, so the mpg's wouldn't even out the price.

    20 OMFG! Is it a 2WD 4 cyl stick?!
Mine gets 12-13 if I'm lucky. Admittedly my commute is through the hills though.
I have never paid more than a 15 cent up charge on diesel over Premium. Right now it's 10 cents less.
How long we're the maintenance intervals on the VW 3.0L?
Porsche says every 5k. I think they just want the car in so they can fill the bluetec tank. You can buy bluetec liquid at Walmart also for way less.

If youd a left the truck stock you wouldn't be getting 12-13 mpg. Amazes me how many bitch about fuel mileage but refuse to acknowledge the realities that the mods they did to their trucks deteriorated the performance to increase appearance. Kids......

I traded a 09 2dr Rubicon, was the 5th 2dr I've owned, in on my new 13 Taco and though I miss my Rubi greatly there is NO comparison in build quality between Jeep and Toyota.

My Rubi was always the butt of my joke whenever someone would ask me how I liked my Wrangler. I always say the same thing, its the biggest POS I ever loved. They are not only very cheaply built, they're very poorly built as well and yet I still miss my Rubi.

Ignorance and demand huh? its been one of the best selling pickups and has one of the best resale values ..

I agree, diesel would be great if it got amazing gas mileage, otherwise I cant see why a tacoma would need it.
Tacomas Gas mileage is good already compared to other trucks, no reason for a diesel since I dout it would make that much of a differance..

Eh, Germany is a whole different situation than the USA. They don't have anywhere near the auto density that we have. I googled cars vs. population, and the USA is 3rd highest, Germany 21st. It's apples and oranges.

The two countries ahead of the USA? San Marino and Monaco.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_vehicles_per_capita

And a lot of the countries on the list would love to get the auto emissions down, it's not a good situation for public health.

    2. Stock value in my lug nut wholesaler! Good luck getting your wheels off after 50k miles

My 13 toco is a 4L v6 auto 4x4 and it is averaging 20.1 I suspect it will do better if I drive slower...I drive 65 on trips ...
I drove the FJ with the same motor for a couple of years and it did about the same.

I guess I should have said that I rented a Jeep for a week for the last 10 years(is that better?).
If you keep it simple(no options) I really don't see a problem. I'm getting it at net-net since I'm in the business so if it is a POS I can bail out without too much of a loss. They are just fun vehicles. I just want something different and my Jeep dealer is across the street from my work so as long as its under warranty what the hell. I never own a car out of warranty ever.
My Tacoma has had a broken window track issue(drivers window woud only go 1/2 way down) and one headlight prematurely went cloudy in the first year of ownership. Thats two more problems than my last six vehicles put together! Porsche CaymanR, Porsche Cayenne, Audi A3 Diesel(2), Audi S4(2). All of these cars never had one problem in the first year. AND Toyota fought me on both(obvious quality) issues!

I totally agree. It has been my experience that "Toyota quality" is WAY over rated.

I'm not sure who would ever wait 50,000 mile to remove or retorque their lug nuts? I loosen and retorque at least every 5,000mi.
Sounds like a normal Amurican: Danm ma wheel nuts are froze! And only after not touchin them fur 4 years!!

I had heard of this issue though. I'll get a set of lugs that are non factory.

What a piece of crap. Having a deisel is not even close to a good trade off for those issues.
