What all is involved in removing the front brake rotors on a 2004 Tacoma Double cab PreRunner 3.4L ? Do they just slide off of the wheel studs, or is there more to it than that?

Remove the caliper, and they will slide right off. :)

I'm not sure if the 5 lug rotors have them, but 6 lug rotors have two threaded holes on opposite sides of the hub. Just thread the proper sized bolts into those holes and tighten uniformly. If you've saturated the hub/ wheel studs with penetrating oil (while tapping on the edge of the old rotor) and alternately tightening the 2 bolts- you should eventually hear a loud POP. Hopefully, that will be the sound of the rotor breaking loose and nothing else :) The good news is, using this method lowers the chance of messing up the wheel bearings.

I was amazed to find that the rotors that were sold from a major auto supply chain did not have those two threaded holes on either side of the rotor hub- used for removal. After some measurements I found the factory specs are: a "H" bit (metric)- 6.7564 mm. or .26600 inch or slightly larger than 17/64". The tap for the threading would be: 8 mm. with a 1.25 mm thread pitch- 6.900 mm dia. or .27165 inch dia. Adding these two holes will make future rotor removal a snap- no hammering required.
