The current Clean Diesel engines(with Bluetec) ane WAY cleaner at the tailpipe than most any gas engine.

I plan on getting an old 4x4 yota with a blown motor and dropping a 4BT(4 cylinder Cummins) in it.

I'm a believer , my father owns a TDI vw . I don't know the details but the maintance costs are higher . He gets 40+mpg but fuel is also more expensive . My friends 1.8 gas vw gets over 30 so which is better is debatable .

I just don't see it being that benificial in a tacoma , I looked into diesel trucks before purchasing my 2013 taco , and the mpg wasn't impressive .

You buy a gas vehicle for $20k, it gets 30mpg and gas is $3.50/gal driving 12,000 miles a year. That is $1400 in gas per year.

You buy a diesel vehicle for $25k. It gets 40mpg and diesel fuel is $4.00/gal driving 12,000 miles a year. That is $1200 in gas per year.

The $5k expense of buying the diesel, plus the diesel fuel costing extra will take 25 years to make up the difference.

In my dreams? Yea I want the torque. In reality, no way is it saving me any money.

What a bunch of nancies. OP comes on here and says he's selling the tacoma and going with a different brand, and you'd think he just pissed in everybody's cheerios. 10 pages of men crying, and telling the OP he's an idiot. Tacomas have problems, just like every other car manufacturer. Just look at the stickies in the 1st and 2nd gen sections.

I think the diesel wranglers are badass, they've been available with the diesel option overseas for years, just like the tacoma, aka Hilux. I used to have a wrangler and loved it. If I had the money, I'd check out the diesel wrangler. Jeep, Toyota, Ford, etc... who gives a shit. Never understood why people act like such babies over someone wanting a different vehicle on forums.

Hopefully the OP isn't chased away by all this faggitry, and post pics of his new ride.

I see the standard current model attitude of a lot of Americans, 5 or so years after they had a truck, suddenly its crap, or bad service. New truck or suv always solves it .. for 3 years, then with all the new dazzle out there, guess what is crap now.

I don't want to convince the OP to stay in the fold, just to really weigh in on how much the trade will cost him, and do the math on gas.$10,000 in gas is a lot , might take years to offset. Also don't go away mad, i'm sure the jeep dealer will love you being mad, buyers under the influence of emotions is what they specialize in.

Likely more than that if it were available... I'd buy one, but I'd buy a Ford before I'd buy any Chrysler product, and I'll never buy another Ford, so there's the food chain.

The Cummins is the best consumer-grade oil burner available. It's a shame that it's wrapped in the worst sheetmetal available.
Likewise, the Ford is probably the best fullsized pickup, but the Powerjoke is a.....

I would be all for the Taco Diesel. I can tell you the Hilux diesel is huge in Coasta Rica they are really cool looking. I can not speak about the Hilux for drivability but I did rent a small Mitsubishi diesel and it was awesome for Costa. I have also owned 2 wranglers an 88 that was JUNK!!! Terriable. Also had a 2001 that was a reliable vehicle that I put 170,000 miles on. My younger brother is still driving it. I think if you take care of the TJ's they are good trucks. Obviously I got the Taco for a reason and personally think it is a far far superior truck over the Jeep in all possible ways. But from my experience with the TJ they are decent. That being said I wouldn't pay the 40,000 USD they were asking for this Jeep conversion pickup image.jpg

Ask my buddy about the '99 Cherokee that he ended up getting bought back under California Lemon Law after 3 years because of rust.... IN LOS ANGELES!

It never saw salt or snow.

imo it wouldnt be worth it to own a diesel jeep. One, its a jeep.

Two, what benefits would you really get? Towing anything a typical diesel fullsize does is out of the question. jeeps are far to small, regardless of torque.

Some say mileage...I guess thats to be determined. As of now, diesel costs over a doller more then gasoline where i live. I dont see that going down. I mean if the jeep will pull some insane number on mileage, then MAYBE it would be worth it.... but in reality, who buys a truck or jeep to save on gas? :rolleyes

Me personally, id take a v-8 jeep over a diesel. And thats only if I HAD to have a jeep. But I'd convert a v-8 into my tacoma far before id consider a jeep.:D

Again, this is only my opinion.

Edit: I guess diesel prices dropped a little, just checked the gas prices by me and its no longer a dollar difference it is about .60 cents

No way in hell I would want to do that in my old jeeps. Definitely not during a Maine winter with the roads full of pot holes. You hit a pot hole and the whole front end feels like it is going to come unglued
