Is (Boise) Idaho part of the Pacific Northwest?

It's a political/mormon church influence thing. And if Boise belongs in Mountain time geographically-speaking, then half of Nevada and probably part of SoCal should too.

 

IDK, the Rockies seem a bit far to call everything west of it PNW but I guess it would work in lieu of adding another distinction. The other argument would be to say what type of climate, when I think of PNW, i generally think of rainy wet forested areas, in which case eastern WA and OR plus ID would not be part of it.

Where would you draw the distinction between north west and south west?

Which part? The politics/LDS reference is about the influence the church has on politics in Idaho and Utah. They were well established in the area long before we adopted the time zones we use today. When the decisions were being made about where to draw the lines, southern Idaho was linked with SLC for that reason.

The other part was about how the PST/MST border wanders back and forth.

Same place it is now. OR/CA border heading east.

So Oregon touches the pacific, but part of it is mountain time, so by that logic an arbitrary time zone change means that part of Oreon is no longer in the Pacific Northwest. While the time zone change is a good argument, the way the time zones are split dont make much sense so inwouldnt use that to determine region boundry IMO, why is the top half of Idaho pacific time and the bottom mountain? Why would you split a state width wise for time zone diffrrence vs length wise

Just think of who/what the dominant sociopolitical forces were in SW Idaho during the early 20th century when the current time zone map was being drawn.

Pacific Northwest refers to a particular climate pattern more than anything else.

Northern Idaho - yes! Central and south east Idaho ... NO!

Just like the very NW Corner of MT is considered part of the PNW while the rest of the state is not. Climate, precip, weather patterns, and fonna are all indicative of ... PNW.

Yes, I would consider Idaho in the PNW region, but partially in the midwest mountain climate region.

I do not consider Alaska as part of the PNW.
