So here I am, a first time Toyota owner. I bought an 09 after i hit a deer in my ranger. I'm under the impression that the Tacoma is made at NUMMI in California. A joint venture between GM and Toyota.

I got to the dealer to pick up my free all-plastic "Toyota Genuine Parts" coffee mug (I can walk through security with it in hand) and I ask the guy... Where are these trucks made? I'm under the impression that this is Japanese made in the US. The parts guy rambles on... I ask, well then where's mine made? He scans the bar code... oh... MEXICO. I then go on a 10 minuite rant (In uniform) about how this is morally wrong.

So I was swindled, I am debating on getting rid of it ON PRINCIPLE. Someone please enlighten my ignorant ass. Where are the parts from? How come is says PRODUCT DE BAJA CALIFORNIA? That's MEXICO. If I wanted a mexican made car I would have bought a GM or a Chrysler. Do you think Toyota would swap it for a US made one? I sure could use some info. my wife is not to happy with me.

What's wrong with a Toyota built in Mexico? It's still a quality Toyota.

    Mine was made in California.

I thought only the composite bed was from Mexico...

Now I understand that they are made there but we have the MASSIVE trade deficit. I have not choice but to buy about 90% of the crap I have but a car is something else. Clothes, electronics, etc. that stuff is coming from where ever and I SPECIFICALLY ASKED that this is made in the US and the dealer said yes. Well, it's very upsetting. My first day off is Wednesday. I'm gonna go back to the dealer and see what they will do.

If Toyota can't resolve this. Any ping, knock, click, rattle, the tranny shifts weird, rust or any problem at all (even if it happens once)... DEALER! This MEXICAN MADE car will cost Toyota more than any other. I swear by it.

    I am seriously pissed off

If your truck is built in Mexico doesn't mean the truck is a POS. Its still under Toyota and their standards.

I don't want to sound arrogant but for example... I'm a pilot. I've seen first hand the difference between a Boeing made product (US Assembled) and a Airbus/ Embraer made product (Foreign Assembled) and it is huge. There is no substitute for a US worker. We are the greatest country in the world for a reason. I guess, I will just have to live with it.

Are the parts at leastmfrom the same sources?

Hey, just to let you know, I used to work for Boeing here in Kansas, before we were sold to Canadians and became Spirit Aerosystems, and Boeing studied Toyota's build processes in an effort to better their product.

Not saying that an American built Toyota is better or worse than one assembled in Mexico. But I am guessing Toyota's quality control is going to make it impossible to tell.

    Just my two cents.

Dunno, but whether it is built in Mexico or it is built in California, it is still built by Mexicans. It is still a Taco, and Mexicans can take pride in their work and build quality vehicles as well as Americans, or Japanese. I don't see your problem, does Mexico have a reputation for building bad products? I mean they built the VW beetle there from the 60's until like 2003, while most cars built in the US since then have completely fallen apart. Sorry for my rant.

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure the parts are identical, I'm sure the equipment used to assemble the vehicles are identical and I'm sure the factory was designed and put together based on Toyota standards. A Big Mac from BC tastes like a Big Mac in Kansas and I'm sure that other than looking at the VIN, people wouldn't know a US Built Taco from a Mexican Taco . . . insert bad food joke right about now . . . LOL :)
