Hi all so Just trying to figure out how to fix this steering wheel wobble that starts around 80kmh and gets worse the higher in speed the worse of a wabble the steering wheel gets. I had this with my last tires and rims and figured it was the wheel alighnment and got one done,,still same wobble..Then figured it was the tires off balence and left it till I got new tires and rims as I was planning on getting some soon any ways which I did yesterday, and now even with the new tires and rims still same wobble, so I went to get these new tires and rims balenced and they said they were fine, so still same damb wobble. I have new struts and shocks a month old and steering bushings as well and everything in the front end is all tight.. this is vary frustrating as I hate the steering back and forth shaking the steering and vibrating the truck,,anyone els had this problem ? PLEASE HELP:mad:

    please define "wobble" ?

shimmy noticed at the steering wheel
    isn't really a wobble IMO

start by checking your rack mount bushings for movement/play

check rack's inner/outer tie rods for play

when was the last time it had an alignment ?
"should've been immediately after installing new struts"

there's a whole host of other possibilities...

    pointing out the little stuff...
be positive the wheel's are mounting correctly...
lug nuts are tight and seating properly

understand many tire balance shops ignore the fact
that 1st gen tacoma are lug centric
and often balance them using the more common
hub centric method on the spin balancer...
    * Instead of using cones... use a lug centric backing plate.

^ this may/may not correct your issues...
but it will rule out the tires and wheels being culprit

See if the any of the symptoms below match your situation. If so, take a look at that thread.

I had vibration in my steering wheel when accelerating to highway speed getting on the interstate and had to adjust the rack preload. If you do that, turn it just a little, because a little goes a long way when adjusting the rack bushing. Don't get it too tight.

    Symptoms:
When the truck is not moving, with the engine on or off, the steering wheel can be freely rotated approximately 1" back and forth without moving the front wheels. At highway speeds, the truck will occasionally wander to the left or right, requiring frequent correction. When driving over speed bumps or pot holes, a clear "rattle" or "clunking" can often be heard and felt in the steering wheel. When driving on firm, rocky, off-road surfaces, the steering rattle is very apparent and annoying.

Ok so the steering wheel goes back and forth about an inch when over 80klh and gets faster as I go faster. and I did the alighnment not even a month ago when I had my old tires and rims. and now with new tires and rims its still the same, I did tighten my steering box but didnt help as well as changed my steering bushings as well as clutch and shocks as the toyota 4x4 shop did an inspection and found them to need replacing the only thing I didnt do was change the rotors as they do pulsate when breaking but that would have nothing to do with it as the calipers are not seized and dragging on the rotor,

I think a lot of mine is my steering rack bushings. I really need to change those

    warped rotors could be culprit

the ifs steering rack is often unappreciative of warped rotors
it tends to acknowledge other worn components easily as well
yeah... it's kinda finicky that way. [IMG]

I'd probably follow up on that if it were muh munk.

Hmm maybe will have to try changing the rotors. I did notice today that the main steering wobble is around 80-100 kmh and goes away at 110and120 ...And the steering rack bushings were done along with damn near every other major thing on this truck lol so the last thing to try is the rotors I guess. I just figured a warped rotor wouldnt interfear unless it was a siezed caliper draggin on the warped rotor..as the steering rack bushings didnt change a thing..thanks for all the replys guys :)

Have what seems to be the same issue. Waiting on new rims and tires before getting it aligned and balanced. If the problems persist I was going to look into the steering rack aftermarket polly bushings. With warped rotors, cant you feel they are warped during braking?

If you feel something like a pulse in your pedal while breaking, pretty safe to say the rotors are warped. My rotors feel great when breaking. I took my truck to a shop to get the tires balanced and the rubber is so far gone I guess the tires are a bit distorted and the shop tech said it would be a waste of my money to try and balance them. So I'm assuming its my beat up tires and that will be fixed soon. If it is still there, I'll be getting something like this. or the energy ones.

I did replace my bushing in the rack but never did the warped rotor because I dont really care if the rotor makes the wheel wobble as I dont use the brakes much when im driving fast and dont really notice..I just dont want the steering to do it while driving down the highway and I have read from a few here saying that the rotor could cause this even if im not breaking at the time ? I cant make sense of it but I guess I will have to change them and see lol

It was a tire issue. I got some smaller 31s and no more steering back and forth on the highway ..I guess M/T 31s are no good on these trucks

^^ I wouldn't say the size was what was bad, but that the tires degraded over time then causing the issue. I have some slightly larger than OE Falkins on my rig and they have been great for tens of thousands of miles, but now that they have had two nail fixes, and their tread is approaching slick status, the wobble has developed. I'm pretty confident when I swap over to a friends 4runner rims and tires it will go away.

I got some similar problems, If I hit a pothole or bump I hear a clunking noise, I noticed this a while back. I checked the ball joints this weekend by jacking up front end and grabbing wheel everything seemed good no slop, any ideas?

I put falken rocky mtn ats tires on mine, wobble got worse when I did. I like the tires though.

Is it normal for the steering to have a tiny bit of play? Driving either my parents Ram or Hyundai the steering wheel feels a lot more tight, I mean the vehicles moves as soon as you move the wheel. Mine takes more movement to do the same.
