Anything welding

I've used speed glass , millers, harbor freights and haven't really noticed a real difference, the hfs might be a bit slower but not much. I went back to fix shields with gold lenses, much better.

 

Here I was thinking I was happy to finally have a large window fixed shade. I actually looked at a gold lens for it the other day but it was scratched in the store and the last one.

 

Golds the shit, get one! Airgas will order any shade you want, they're like $10, you can also order then online. I have 13, 10,and an 8 it only takes a few second to change then out and90% of the time I'm using a #10

There are times when i prefer an auto darkening helmet but i really prefer a fixed shade due to the option of gold lensesand no delay.

 

So I need to be looking for one that has the solor power instead of a battery operated one? So how does one know when to not used the auto darkening helmet, trying not the burn the eyes or dies it just go out immediately?

 

Be sure you turn it on. Then just point at the sun or other bright light. Should see it switch. It will also quickly switch when you turn it on.

The solar powered ones have batteries.

 

Mine is a solar powered Miller Elite, it has no batteries to change. It is powered solely from the power of the welding arc and is an adjustable shade, I think shades 9-13. About $130 at my LWS.
The battery powered one I had just quits darkening when the batteries die. But there is still the UV filtering effect so you don't flash yourself, but you know to change the batteries. I believe most of them use 2 AAA batteries for power.

 

At $130 I don't think it's an elite.. Mine was $300+ tax which is pretty common retail pricing on them.
My elite also has batteries... They're under the rubber trim ring around the filter insert. It's solar powered, yet sill has batteries to keep it working.

It would take a long time like over an hours worth or more to really burn your eyes. All auto darkening helmets have a UV protection when off or the battery dies so this won't happen. The light shade will protect you from this happening. Even the cheap Harbor Freight ones. You will start to feel like having grit rubbed in your eyes if you have got welders flash. I know I have had this before. Very uncomfortable and some what damaging but it is preventable on all auto darkening helmets. The nice thing about them is you can leave them down compared to the fixed lenses and not worry about getting flashed.

 

Just got me a Longevity MigWeld 140 and freekin love it! its a huge improvement over the Haror Freight 90 I had. Now I can have fun finishing up some projects. Then maybe get to building me some sliders.

Nice! I have that same Makita 5" grinder. Had it for over 15 years. Great grinder. Good setup you have.

 

Agreed on the grinder, we use Hitachi grinders at work and when I used my Makita to do that cut it was like night and day. Thanks.
