Lay down the law next time. Unfortunately you can't be their friend, you have to be their boss. It sucks, but it's the way it goes. Send next guy who subverts you next time home for the day without pay. Start taking away their money, they'll smarten up real quick, or you can find other people who will.

Nice..eat at Margaritaville (stay for the show, it happens every hour or so..that's all I'm saying), Rum Runner on Tropicana is a nice bar menu too..

I'd try the nice guy route first..if it doesn't work, do what Seth said. I did it once at my job at the clothes store and it worked at least on that person. That said I was dealing with teenage girls there.

Instead of saying "would you mind" or "I'd appreciate it if you" you need to rephrase it to something like "I need you to" or "when you're done with that you've got to" blah blah blah. It all has the same meaning just showing authority without trying to push them around.

Dave, I would try the method Chris mentioned. Lead by example and try to gain their respect. If that doesn't work on all of them, and you have a few stubborn ones, you can always ask your boss for advice. Assuming your boss is a good manager, he will appreciate you coming to him and asking for help rather than keep quiet and let the problem get worse. In my job, there are a lot of things I can handle on my own, but I will spend 10 hours arguing with a sub's project manager to get it done or, I escalate it to my boss, he calls his boss and they work it out in 2 minutes. Just a suggestion, but if the guys who are working under you are really insubordinate, it might be worth talking to your boss for advice before going with the iron fist approach. Possibly even approach him with some ideas of your own and he can help steer you in the right direction.

No need to drink though man..I went there in 05 and Rum Runner is good food cheap, even cheaper than the buffets. Margaritaville is a great time and I am by no means a Buffett fan.

That's how I see it as well Mike..more flies with honey, and if you act just like one of them they aren't as likely to see you as the authority guy. That said there are those you will have to forgo that approach with but when and if that happens is the time to do that

I do get some of the "I'm older" mentality from people at my part time job. A handful I can count on every season pitching a bitch..

Or I guess you could use this good advice:rolleyes:

Haha, in all reality it's good advice, probably better than mine. I just have no patience for people not doing what they are asked.

Normally, I would agree with your approach but you have to be careful these days. Figure the people in the shop are older than him, may have been there longer, are a tight knit group or are part of a union. If you try the iron fist approach with any of those circumstances, you could end up creating a HUGE shit storm that would not be well appreciated by upper management. Who knows, maybe his boss would tell him to take the hard line but, if you do that, you want to make sure the company is backing you.

I would have to agree with this one, but be warned that making threats like this does require a follow through. Right when I graduated college I went to work for an engineering firm and I was immediately assigned to a 6 month construction oversight project. I was a shy 23 year old kid who never had to really put my foot down on anything before, I got along with everyone and it seemed everyone got along with me.

Regardless, I was thrown out into the field with a crew of 15 construction workers who had been doing that type of work for years and years. Everyone of them knew that I was a sucker right off the bat and began taking advantage of me, pushing the limit and trying to cut corners anywhere they could. The less they had to do, the quicker the job was done and the more money in their pocket. I was telling a construction laborer, who is more than double my age, remove a rock from a trench because it is too big. He immediately protested saying that there was no issue and asked if I wanted to measure the rock and confirm it's size (a really sarcastic comment to make regarding the context of my title and the work we were doing). I fired back that if he didn't do it, I had the authority to shut the project down for the day and send 'em home, which was a two hour drive to their shop (these types of comments & jabs had been going on since day one, my boss gave me the go ahead to end it by sending them home the next time it happened). Guess what, the idiot ignored me and continued moving along, proceeded to look me right in the eye and bury the rock while saying to everyone, "watch this." Made the call and told them all to pack it up, go home, and we can try again tomorrow. They all protested and kept on working until I asked if I needed to shut the project down for the remainder of the week...I was nervous to go back to work the next day, but not one of them said a word to me and everyone did exactly what I asked. If I let that one rock stay in the trench, then they would of been free to use me as a door mat for the rest of the project.

The only reason I tell you all that is because I have been in your shoes, you are only there to provide for you and yours, not to make friends with co-workers. If you clean the bathroom and everyone knows you did it, then you set the bar for them and their expectations. Send one home without pay because they are acting up, then you made an example that I am sure no one else will want to follow.

So apparently my dad had a stroke last year because a scan showed some brain damage. He might have meningitis because he's delusional. He is really out of it and was thinking there were extra people in the room yesterday. He swung at a nurse but missed her luckily, and he was speaking Russian constantly last night (he rarely speaks Russian anymore). They have no idea what's wrong with him.

    Fun :pout:
