Last night at work. Hopped in. Turned the key. And it became a crank a thon..... Literally had to crank on it for 10-15seconds! After 5 it started catching. But not enuff to take off.... No idiot lights. But acted like it was getting no fuel? Started fine when I left for lunch a bit ago. Only thing I did. Was didn't let the fuel pump completely cycle. But I've started it this way before (I try not to. But was in abit of a hurry). Anyone else have this happen?

2012? If you're still under the 3 year/36k take it to the dealer and have them perform a fuel system check. Could have a faulty fuel pump. No reason a 2012 shouldn't start right up every time.

That's the 1st time it has done it. Otherwise with in a second or two it's running, it was jus weird. I normally don't just flick the key to start. Usually wait for the fuel pump to cycle. All the idiot lights to go out. Then crank it. And let it warm up a minute or two then leave. But yeah. It's a 2012 with 16700 on it. Gonna see how she acts tonight at work. Only other time that came close. Was last month when I was in sudbury and started it at -20*f but that's because it was so flippin cold

That's to be expected in cold weather because of the battery cranking...but under normal conditions, I've NEVER had a problem starting my truck right away, even if I don't prime the pump. I usually never prime it anyway. Just a quick flick of the key and she's running in less than a second.

you're not the only one. my 2012 does that too but I'm not sure what it is either because it's done it to me in cold AND hot weather since i'm in texas and the weather goes from summer to winter every other week. i usually have to crank it about twice, sometimes 3 times but yeah, scares the shit out of me every time.

Right. I just done like doing that. Kinda imprinted in my brain from the fork trucks at work, my one snowmobile, etc etc, going to keep an eye on it, just texted my salesman who I know pretty good. About that. And the messy service tech who spilled about a half quart of oil on my battery and inner fender that I'm not to happy about

I've never had a problem either in 6 years..... but it happened just ONE TIME (so far) the other week. Cranked and cranked for about 10 seconds and I let off. I tried it again while applying some gas slightly and it started right up.

I've always just turned the key and cranked it over...I've never 'waited' for the pump.

Just a fluke I guess....as its been fine ever since (knock on wood)

FYI, pumping the gas to start any car with an EFI is 100% useless. The injectors use an electrical signal to spray fuel into the combustion chamber, whereas in the old days with carburetors, the pedal controls how much fuel is dripped into the manifold. Starting a carburated engine with the pedal down can prime it with fuel to start up. But not for our trucks or any newer cars (1990+)

Do u have more than one Toyota key with chip on your key ring? A Volvo would do this if it has both keys, belonging to the car, on the same ring sending a signal to the immobilizer receiver, the immobilizer or something gets confused, what's your immobilizer light doing when this happens?

Good point...didn't think about the immobilizer. But does it work on proximity, or if the key with the chip is in the ignition?

I have no clue what the range is on the chips, I would imagine a foot or two at least... But that in my imagination of course and a whole lot more is very twisted up there

Now I wonder if they changed the fuel delivery system components.

Curious to see if any 4bangers out there have this happen, they don't have immobilizer a, at least up to the new body style, where things may have changed...

    All v6 have chipped keys

My 09 4banger, nor my 11 sport has had this happen, 09 did not have chipped key and 11 does, on the thread that was listed above there are 08 and 10s doing it too...
