Someone enlighten me as to why people in motorsports are considered athletes.

    Driving fast requires a mental focus that few regular people can muster. I used to have a motocross bike and a couple hot laps was not only physically taxing but more it was mentally taxing to keep focus on what is up ahead and stay at max speed all the time. I bet auto racing is the same, you are not just sitting there gazing out the window, and if you are you are not going anywhere fast enough, braking late enough, or powering through the corners hard enough. You need to be mentally sharp, allways alert, and yes physically strong to keep driving at full potential for more than 15 minutes to excell as a driver in any motorsports.

    Don't know what your definition of an "athlete" is but surely it takes mental skills as well as brute strength for most any definition of athlete.
