    Immobilizer stops it from cranking.

Old plugs can cause a slow start, but I doubt it's that. There is a checkball valve in the sending unit. It holds pressure in the line, to stop the condition you have. A fuel pressure gauge will confirm this.

On my 1989 I had that problem. It was the distributor cap. I had to replace it every year or two. My mechanic said it was the nature of the beast.

Not sure on this, but I wouldn't doubt it, some manufacturers immobilizers disable fuel (prevents injectors from firing), others ignition, and the rest starters, what Toyota uses I don't know...

Mine has done in the past randomly as well (3 or 4 times ever) but it hasn't happened recently in the past 6 months and I have never been able to replicate it.

I read somewhere (can't seem to find it now) that this can occur if a bunch of circumstances line up; crank being in a certain rotational position, being in gear with foot on clutch, etc., that the fuel pump won't turn on. not sure if this is BS or legit.

    BTW - I have a 2010, DCSB 4.0MT

My 2011 V6 has done this a couple times, as I noted in the "Hardly caught my tacoma doing a hard start" thread linked above.

The only consistency on my findings is that it seems to only happen if there's big difference in temperature from when it was started before. So like if it was 30's on the way to work and then 60's on the way home. Other than that, I got nothing...

Guess I should count my blessings...I beat the living shit out of my 2010 with 80k and it hasn't had a single problem starting yet.

Unless some changes have been made, or my memory is defective from when I was a yota tech, it stops the starter.

No other Toyota keys. Or car keys for that matter, it's an auto. Not stick. Only mod is a compu star remote start done at dealer.

Range on a transponder key (any key with a black head pretty much) is activated when around 3.5 inches from the ring around the keyway. So if two keys to the same car are on te same ring, it's likely to be in range.
Almost every car today has a transponder in the key. A good test is go to a locksmith an ask for just a door key, one with just metal. Then try it in the ignition.
If you want to make the metal key work the ignition, tape the head of the transponder key somewhere in or on the steering column, as close to the ignition as possible. Metal key should now work!

Remote starts can also make a transponder/immobilzer temperamental.
Especially when trying to program a new key to the car.
Without the other Toyota keys on your ring, it's probably not the immobilzer system though.

My 06 4.0L has done it twice ever. Was an old battery + cold weather. The slow cranking flooded the engine.

EFI engines can flood, believe it or not most modern ECU's are programmed to recognize a wide open throttle input on start up and will cut the fuel to the injectors until the engine fires.

I had a similar problem with BluTaco. I learned that if it didn't start right off to cycle the ignition switch and on the second attempt it would always start promptly. Hasn't done that for years and I never did find out what was causing this.

Hmm, could be the Ecu compensated for the early morning temp, and when u start for lunch when it's warmer could still have that map saved from earlier, and since variables changed, and your Ecu hasn't (because it wasn't running for a few hrs) suddenly it needs to adjust to a new map to fire correctly, if you can make sense of that, it's hard putting wats in my brain in writing,

Acknowledged, Toyota disables starter with their immobilizer...

Temps were around 60 this morning and still around there at lunch. Think it got to 70 max. Had plenty of days where the temp shifted more and no issues, don't think it is related to that.
