I don't think changing any fluids are a waste at 30k, just my $0.02, it does give me peace of mind too.

Mine was at 50K when I did my 2010 and it was the same way. Only difference is that I bought it used and didn't know what shape it would be in so I changed all fluids. Rear was a little dirty but not bad at all. The front and Trans Case looked brand new.

At least I now know what is in it. If you bought new, I wouldn't change at 30K. JMO.

Off road with any sort of real water crossings and changing your diff oil more frequently suddenly seems like a good idea.

Good for you for cutting corners on maintenance, I'll continue taking care of my truck properly :)

Get a hand pump and it only takes a few minutes. I have 350 miles on my truck and plan on putting Royal Purple in engine and rear diff at 1k, after breakin. My truck needs some purple blood.

I drained my '09 at 35k and it was somewhat dark. I'd say it was time but I had seen worse. I would guess it saw a little water.

You wanna talk neglected, I pulled the plug on factory fluid on my new used '07 a week ago. No joke. You don't want to know what that old 90W looked like with six digit mileage!

I dip the rear diff into water a lot launching my boat so I'll stick to regular intervals. I run a length of plastic tubing up and over the passenger side tire and fill the diff through that. It's nice to standup. :)

If you do not tow or take water crossings, there is a good chance you do not need new diff fluid so often. However even if you are using very lightly, you would still want some way to check for issues such as metal shavings you would look for when changing diff oil.

For people who pay somebody to change diff oil, 30K is probably more often than they prefer. For people who change their own diff own, 30K is no biggie. 20 minutes of your time and $20 in oil is not expensive for piece of mind.

We routinely go 100K plus on both diff and transmission oil on our company trucks. Both of the Tacomas I have driven in the past five years have had the transmissions start whining. Last one started at 100K, this one is starting now at 75K. The boss gets rid of them at 150K or so, and doesn't believe in doing anything other than oil changes and safety related stuff.

My trucks get trans, transfercase and diff oil changed every 30K whether they need it or not. Usually it looks like it could have gone to 60K with no problem. I don't beat on my vehicles.

30K may be a bit early, but oil is still cheaper than metal......for now, anyway.

Its cheap insurance and peace of mind for me. I am religious about oil changes at 5k though because I can feel a difference in engine response and my gas mileage starts to suffer like 5 miles less per tank.

I read the whole title

I've always had terrible luck with pumps, I just stick the nozzle tip in the fill hole and squeeze the hell out of the bottle. The front diff is really the only one that sucks with that method, you can only squeeze about 1/2 the bottle in so you have to keep refilling.
