Just to be clear, You are talking about a prerunner...(rear wheel drive truck) not a front 2wd car?... Big difference.

Why are we still talking about this?

LOL. Don't know if it was balls or pure insanity. Left Tacoma (WA), two-up (rider & passenger), Dec 29 on a fully loaded (fairing, saddlebags, & travel truck) Kawasaki. Ran into freezing rain in Oregon, snow & ice through Grants Pass, a flood in Arizona, a sand storm in Texas, and a very unpleasant cop in South Carolina.

Perhaps, but I don't see where it makes any difference in what I said.

Yeah, I'm going to stop there. Too many what if's... We could go on all day about tires and driving skills, fwd car vs rwd truck ve 4x4...but that's not the question..

"could i make the argument that my prerunner is more capable in snow than a stock 4x4?"

Ill stay on topic... Not a chance

you definitely get pulled around going thru deep snow; the truck goes generally in the direction of momentum, give or take being jerked 2-3' from side - side, from whichever side has the most drag on it, or which wheel has traction. Luckily you stop pretty quick if you let off the throttle.

ya i would have to disagree. Last winter the opening day of the local hill it snowed 8" the night before and 8" during the day. This was when I first got the truck and the tires were pretty bald. After scraping off my windows and turning on the truck i put it in drive (with 4wd on) and just drove right out of the spot. Meanwhile at least 3 other vehicles (rwd suvs and fwd cars) were all just sitting there spinning their tires. I went and helped push a couple of them. So based on my experience....no your 2wd with good tires still is not as good as a 4wd with bad tires.

This thread is like the energizer bunny...

Do you know if those rwd suv's and fwd cars had any type of traction control with it engaged? How about the state of their tires? Those were rhetorical questions because I'm sure you do not know the answers and I don't expect you to. You were busy helping them get unstuck. I'm guessing they either didn't have traction control engaged/available and/or they didn't have good tires...hence the tires spinning and going nowhere.

I've been driving in the snow before and had vehicles spinning out to get to the top of a hill or on the unplowed highway in snow and I made it through fine in the standard mode with VSC on and AutoLSD off.

There are too many factors involved both on (traction control, tires, driver, weight) and off the vehicle (terrain, weather). Just because there's a 4wd in the ditch on a snowy road doesn't mean the 2wd truck can't make it.

Even with the original question from the OP you cannot give a definite answer to without more details and inferring other factors. Watch this:

Could I make the argument my prerunner (with snow tires and traction control) is more capable in the snow then a stock 4*4 (with summer tires and open diff's on both axles)?
    - The answer is probably

Could I make the argument my prerunner (snow tires and traction control) is more capable in the snow then a stock 4*4 (with standard tires and open diff's on both axles)?
    - The answer is depends

Could I make the argument my prerunner (with all season tires and open diffs) is more capable in the snow then a stock 4*4 (with all terrain tires and traction control on both axles)?
    - The answer is no

I think I posted this a couple pages back, but if you take the EXACT same truck and had 4 wheels with power vs 2 wheels with power then the answer is obviously 4wd is better than 2wd. No one with any experience would argue that. But that wasn't the OP's question...

I know what you mean there, but he is intentionally swerving around the trees in that video. Not that that is a bad thing, but I've never seen a legit road that weaves like that. Haha

    Yikes.

Had a few rough trips, but never anything tried to kill us beyond a couple of wet cattle crossings, mud, and an occasional patch of gravel at a driveway.

Far too many here are focusing on unpaved, snow-covered, back-country terrain. The OP never asked about off-roading. His focus was on "requiring all 2 wheel drives to have chains" on roads or highways (none really "require" that off-road).

I owned several 4x4's (currently a TRD Off-Road) and have driven many others (military vehicles, etc), but have also driven enough rear-wheel drive vehicles (on snow) to know there's not as much of a difference on snow-covered roads as some here suggest. A 2wd, in competent hands, can handle snow covered roads reasonably well. Indeed, I've seen plenty of 4wds slipping & sliding (occasionally into ditches) on roads I've quite comfortably handled with a 2wd. Of course, like I said earlier, that argument would fall on deaf ears at roadblocks where police are requiring snow chains to proceed (rules are rules).
