I work at the facility that also houses them (mostly sea lions). I don't deal with them but you can hear them in the morning:

They haul out on the log booms on the other side of the strait opposite where I live , you can hear them for miles

 

It's too bad the world's Navys don't seem to care about scrambling whale's brains with high power sonar blasts

The Navy doesnt really go active much, its a Hollywood myth. PING PING PING , oh jees everyone , theres a sub 12 miles away. We don't give out position out . We do most things passively. When we do go active for training or such , guess what , its directional, and with no cetacians down the bearing, none to ping on. 5 years on 3 subs, we only went active 3x , weap cert. and 2 range confirmations at low power.

Having said that now, fact is even in the 80s, sonar pings are minimized , but I'm convinced it does do damage. 200+ db up close will damage any mammal with air cavities (sinus, lungs etc).

They do care, things don't always go to plan.

Tons more available, more than 3 links. It still doesn't even come close to mean any given sub or ship going to sea will kill any dolphins. Every announced exerise gets the same critisizm, Surface a.s.w. training does the most if not 95% of the sonar dmg. More needs done, but still others must admint not as much pinging is going on as they think.

I spent tons of hours listening to nothing off the Pacific coast, luckily getting to listen dolphin or orca pods communicating or hunting. Good stuff.

 

Type in front st and dock st san diego on google maps or such. Follow zoom into the docks and go to satellite view, you'll see US Navy dolphins in pens. Its not much north of a sub base there. Part of me does wish they'd escape to the wild too

 

This is why Mitsubishi does poorly in North America...
