Does anyone know what is involved? Is there any drilling required? How long will it take? What is the degree of difficulty with 1 being easiest and 10 hardest? Thanks in advance.

One of our fellow TW members did a write up on this, the factory mounts replace the weather stripping on top of the can and utilize that recessed channel as the mounting point, I recall there being some drilling in the channel, I'm sure a detailed search will find the right thread.

35% tint windows, OEM black running boards, OEM black roof rack, Foglight mod, De-badged & Sockmonkey Horns decals added, Two ammo box storage units (removed), 110 volt & 12 volt outlets for back seat area, EGR Slimline inchannel visors (all windows), Fold-A-Cover G4, Tonneau, Bedmat.
I have the OEM rack but I did not do the install myself. (Had the dealer as part of the purchase). I only waited 2 hours for the rack and running boards to be installed and I do not remember any drilling.
I think you remove the channel and then screw in the rack in its place, every thing is already there... (I think????)
By the way it sets my truck apart from the other dozen SWB's here in Yuma. :headbang:

Do you know if any drilling is required for other roof rack brands?

I installed a Yakima Rack a few weeks ago and it's a no drill process. I think Thule has a similar setup. I was worried about wind noise from the door jams but I haven't noticed it a bit. The picture is a little dark but you should be able to see how it attaches.

Wow I like that one much more then the oem. Just my opinion and don't want to offend anyone. Thanks TexasJay. I'll be getting one like that, especially since I don't have to drill

capita...you dont have to drill on the oem ones either....I love yakima products but be warned that over time they can and do wear into the paint and can cause leakage of water into the cab...they also fade from black to grey quickly...

The wearing of paint and leaking sucks man. Not too fuzzy over oem though

Just my opinion but I find they look ugly. Don't like the whole bar on the sides.

Can't you rotate the bars so they sit across the truck, driver side to passenger side? They look killer on this truck (mr. grimm from TN)

I installed the OEM roof rack on my first Tacoma (I traded up to a 4x4). There was no drilling and it was an easy install but I didn't care for it. It made a whistling sound if you left the cross bars out and nothing on the roof. Also, the roof is so whimpy, you can only hold (going from memory here) 150 lbs. I made sure NOT to get the OEM roof rack on this Tacoma.

    Step one:Remove factory channel molding

Step two:Find pre-drilled threaded mounting holes in channels

Step three:Install brackets included with factory rack kit on front(window) ends.

Step four:Mount side rail/crossbar assembly on each side.

    Done

I did find that they whistle when extended but I leave mine stowed when not in use.I actually use mine to mount a Yakima system designed to attach to factory roof rails.See my gallery for pics.

    Two questions:
Does the OEM rack really only support 75 lbs? I need 200 lbs.
Can the threaded holes be used for a yakima Control Tower and is the process reversible (i.e. put the weather stripping back in undamaged)?
