Look to Buy Portable Air Compressor

Hey, I'm looking to get a portable air compressor for my 2002 Tacoma. Just for the tires right now, but maybe I will add a front locker down the line. I dunno how useful it would be or what the extra expense would be like, but maybe something to run some air tools as well, though that's a tertiary concern.

Anyone got anything like that used?

Check out the ARB's for the whole locker and air tool route. Make sure you add a tank as well... or if not the monies for that go to harbor frieght. They have a couple that will handle the tires and you can save for a better setup.

 

Actually I was looking at the ones smittybilt has and they can be mounted and a tank added to them too. Cheaper too.

Where would you locate a tank? Does it fit in the engine compartment? What size tank am I lookin at?

Edit: I like the prices on Viair compressors there. And I like the idea of being able to upgrade to a tank later on. Do I need a constant duty one if I wanna run air tools? I also do not plan on having huge tires, as I'm more interested in gas mileage than serious rock crawling.

Adding these tanks is no one ever worried if someone rear ended you and the tank somehow ruptured?

 

I don't think you drive around with it filled all the time. Just when you are going to use it, fill it up.

Search "Puma 12v compressor". You'll likely eventually end up at Buzzard Gulch's eBay store. About $200 shipped for a 3.5cfm 100% duty cycle 12v OBA compressor.
Mine came in a couple weeks ago. It's about 85% mounted up, just gotta connect it to the battery, do one last air line fitting, and it's done. I have it under the hood, on the PS wheel well, where the stock intake tube would go (I rerouted that to my cowl). I do not currently have a tank installed, but will as soon as I get the time, find the space to fit it (I'm trying to fit a 7-gallon tank), and possibly down-size the stock muffler.
It's pretty big. And heavy. Think stock Tacoma battery size and weight. But it pumps a LOT, and is pretty quiet.
While the Puma is well-built cheap Chinese crap, it does have some advantages others don't, like a built-in cooling fan.

 

Im rocking the big smittybilt. It inflates my tires from 15-35 psi in about 2 minutes each. I've tried filling a 2.5 gallon air tank before. it inflates it to 75psi in 2.5 minutes, 0-115 in 5 minutes. It is not constant duty however. smittybilt says 40 on, 20 off.

Yup. That's the one. I guess I meant $230 out of pocket. Still a hell of a deal.

I divorced the tank from the pump and motor. Mounted the motor/pump on the PS wheel well where my stock intake used to be (rerouted the intake to the cowl), will be mounting the tank elsewhere once I get to that point (likely under the bed somewhere) (I may be using a different tank than the one it came with, seeing as I have four tanks of various sizes sitting around).

As I discovered this weekend, while it may not exactly be mandatory to do so, it is *HIGHLY* recommended to use the switch mechanism it comes with. The unloader is pretty much necessary in order to get it to start again without drawing ~100 amps (ask me how I know ). That is about the only part of my system I haven't worked out 100%.
