The kids thing is sort of a sensative subject and honestly, I don't have a good answer for it because I'm conflicted myself. I don't know what you do with kids who have shot and killed someone. As strongly as I feel about the adults and the consequences for them, I'm equally unsure about how to deal with the minors

When working on his undergraduate degree in physics, a friend of mine had a fellow classmate who was extremely bright but had to be on lithium to remain sane (my friend is a Ph. D in Biophysics). He said the guy was super weird but was so smart the other students didn't like being in the classes with him because he threw off the grade curve. The average score on those tests was about 40 but he'd get in the upper 90s. Being intelligent doesn't mean you can't be insane.

With that said, I agree I don't care if he's nuts.

I'm all for the death penalty in principal, but I agree, why waste the money it takes to put someone to death.

I am for the death penalty in principle but not in application...In the untied states there is a direct correlation between wealth and success in defending oneself in court. If ones financial status has a direct influence on the likelihood of successfully avoiding the death penalty then the application of it will be unfairly biased and poor people will be more likely to be executed.
I find the biggest irony of the situation to be people who on one hand will say that someone should not be executed because of a mental deficiency and then turn around and forgive the person (for some faith based reason or obligation)....
IF your assertion is that they were not responsible for their actions due to a mental illness then why would they need forgiving? It's not their fault...
Holmes was sane enough to buy the guns, ammo, body armor, flash bangs, booby trap his residence, park out back, let himself in, drop the grenades and fire at the crowd....but he doesn't remember it...
Regardless of whether or not he remembers doing it it doesn't preclude him from doing the same thing again...lock him away for life...no window, no books, no letters...23.5hrs a day in a cell...

Put him in prison for life.
If he understands he's in prison & not a mental institute then he's not crazy, if he doesn't know he's in a jail no big deal then.

Sometimes the justice system doesn't seem just, feed him in a jail, death penalty (lotsa money). I still say someone let him have an accident.

Mentally unstable, legally insane, or completely normal...if you fuck up and kill someone (premeditated or intentional) I don't care what the excuse is, you are still a massive threat to society and should face the most severe consequences. How is it fair that a murder should be allowed to live out their days (American prisons are motel 6s compared to prisons in other countries) when their innocent victim is now gone for ever.

Has anyone here ever heard of the CIA's project MK Ultra? Look it up some time it might make you start to think differently about some of the recent events and even some of the past. When the guys controlling our government want agendas passed they might or have done anything possible to achieve their goals. Just saying...

Well from the majority of responses here, most of you have never had a close friend or loved one go through the hell of scizophrenia. Yes this man hurt and killed, and yes this man was acting under his own will power, but he was only doing what the voices were telling him to do. He doesn't deserve to be murdered himself, he didn't know what he was doing at the time. He does deserve to be put in a institution where he'll never be able to hurt anyone ever again.
One of my best friend developed scizophrenia around twenty one years old. Before he got sick, he was the most caring, happy go lucky person, star point guard in high school, prom king, most liked, friendliest person you'd ever meet, go way out of his way to help complete strangers, and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need! Top of the line kid, the kid all the parents want their kids to be like! Then he got sick, and the sickest, most crazy, violent, angry, hateful devil came out! I won't go into my friends demons on here, but he could of killed some one, and never even known it happened, I'm sure of it! Sounds unbelievable, but unless you've been there, you shouldn't judge!

So if your friend went and shot up some family, lets say by the off chance he runs away and nobody catches him...it's not his fault? Nobody is to blame? He should not be held accountable? The family of the theoretical victims should just sit back as watch and understand as he gets put into a nice safe cushy hospital the rest of his life?

Yes sir, just like if you developed scizophrenia, and did something horrible out of the blue, I'd want you to never be able to hurt anyone again, but I wouldn't want you to be hurt either, just put away where you can't hurt anybody else.
I'm not going to argue with anyone on this forum about this, i just have a different perspective. If you'd like to get more educated about the subject, I can recommend some good books and websites. If you want to discuss at length, feel free to pm me.

So then do you think this James Holmes fella should be put in a nice padded hospital room where he can live out the rest of his days in whatever insane fantasy land he inhabits? Pretty fair punishment for a guy who killed a bunch of innocent people I guess...
