Old Thread, but seems like the problem persists.

Dealing with this now on my brother's truck. Was an issue a year ago, dealer did something and it stopped. My brother doesn't know what, I wasn't aware of it back then.

Problem is back and the truck is 400 miles out of warranty. Toyota dealer/service manager is full of garbage. They sent a "Master Tech" down to look at it and said the tires were out of balance. Truck won't stop on dry flat pavement. He is considering dumping the truck.

What do you mean " won't stop on dry flat pavement " ? Do you mean no brakes or ABS kicks on and won't kick off ?

I too feel that the ABS engages too easily, the only time it bothers me is off road in loose dirt or slushy mud/snow. I will go 15mph and tap the brakes and it will just pulsate like the worlds ending but not stop me even the slightest bit. I have learned to just adjust for it..

I have driven ice on the stock ac20s, they did well for a tire not designed for ice. I felt the few abs moments fine. I run snow/ice tires in winter though, just didn't have them yet at the time.
I don't want to sound like I'm judging anyone, but if you aren't used to driving on snow, get a 4wd, then think its gonna do the trick, you just paid the bills for a tow truck operator.

Truck suspensions, being stiffer than a car, often don't stay as planted to the road. with marginal traction , many abs systems just kick in a bit. Try weighing the bed a bit, air down some too. ABS last I knew, mostly helped in a rainy skid... to prevent it, it'll never take the place of a bit more caution or better tires.

If its mechanical related, there is a sprocket or round disc with holes, and a transducer to emit sound for abs, it counts the frequency, if the tires lock it senses it . make sure those stay clean. I have no idea if they can get dirty on a Tacoma, honestly though.

My goodness! Such passion for our braking experiences in this thread. lol

I first experienced light truck ABS with a 2000 S10 and man I would have abs kick in on any little bump and slid out into QUITE a few crosswalks. New tires, dry pavement but bumps always kicked on the ABS. The second time it happened I was in the right lane and decided late to brake for a red light. No biggie, would have stopped easily and routinely except ABS kicked on right before a guy jumped off the curb jogging across the street. I almost hit him and really thought something was wrong with the truck so I took it in. They said nope, just a light truck with ABS.

My new Taco hasn't had a single issue so far, although I think some of the ABS issues people are complaining about are probably due to the vehicle type and weight distribution. May just be the nature of the beast with a light truck. I have had ABS save my bacon in a major pileup in Western PA one year where dozens of cars collided and crossed the center divider etc. A lot of people died, but I stayed in control and on the road able to still somewhat steer on the ice. ABS is different, so you have to understand it's benefits and limitations.

I've had my 13' DCSB off-road for about two months now and the ABS killswitch was the first mod I did. As others reported I felt the ABS sensitivity on mine was borderline dangerous on snow covered roads, I slid straight though two different stop signs and that scared me pretty good. I literally was approaching the stop sign at a slower speed than I ended up reaching once the ABS kicked on. Some have reported the ABS doesn't kick on under 5mph but that doesn't seem to be the case on mine.

I love the truck but my last front wheel drive car stopped better in the snow than my Tacoma does with the ABS on, since the killswitch I haven't had an issue & anytime I see any snow I flip the switch.

I've probably already posted in this thread but I've been driving in New England for 25 years and have NEVER experienced a vehicle with an ABS system as bad as in these trucks. And I've had 3 05's and a dozen other Toyota 4x4's as well as numerous cars. My 89 BMW on summer tires stops better in the snow than my truck with brand new General Grabbers thanks to the lovely ABS. But it was really easy to fix in exactly the same manner I did on my last 05. I just put the 30 amp fuse for the ABS inline with a factory Toyota fog light switch. If the roads are slick I flip the switch and have zero issues stopping. Problem solved for less than $20 and it didn't require cutting any wires so it's easily reversible.

Not gonna read through 28 pages, but feel qualfied to comment on this due to where I live and driving in snow and ice conditions for 4 or 5 months of the year. We call them Anti Stop Brakes here. I think ABS is good on dry pavement to maintain control when you jam your brakes on to avoid a collision. I think it sucks on slippery conditions. I run 4 studded snow tires in the winter. My cul-de-sac has a slight downhill grade to the main road. And there is just no way to bring a vehicle to a stop when that cul-de-sac is covered in glitter. On my Outlander, I disabled ABS, and when I jam on the brakes, the studs dig in and I come to a stop. No problem. On any vehicle that I have NOT disabled ABS, I just have to hope for the best and just cruise on down the cul-de-sac and out on to the main road. And don't blame it on the studs. I've run without studs as well. Can't beat studs on ice and hard packed snow. Not much good for anything else though (slush). I think I would have more control of my vehicle without ABS (on ice anyway). When ABS kicks in I feel that I am not controlling my vehicle, it's controlling me.

Man, I must be the only one who loves the traction control on this truck. I think it's amazing. I snowmobile all over the Northeast and it's great in the snow even pulling a big snowmobile trailer. But then again I don't think I over analyze it like some people here do.

Even though this is a thread about ABS. I have never had an issue with the traction control. I hit the button to get out of my uphill driveway once in a while for the auto LSD rather than using 4WD. Other than that it stays on, and has only ever kicked in on me when I purposely try to get the truck sideways. While driving in snow I'm pretty good at keeping it straight.
