That's just it, since mine is a certified I get 1 year/12000 bumper to bumper anyway. I'd be paying for the 3 years between that and when it hits 7 yrs. I bought it 2 months ago used.

Negative to ext warranty and a Negative to gap insurance/scam.

Drove a 4runner for 15 years, 200k miles and never needed major servicing*. However, I had one issue with the SUV. It would stall at a light randomly. RPM would rise to .5 and dip below 0 a couple of times and shut off. Never knew the problem. Anyone?

Traded it in towards my Taco before I was to replace timing belt, water pumps, brakes, roters, tires, etc.... I estimated I needed to spend close to 2k for servicing and replacements. Got 3k for the trade.

    * I pretty much neglected the service recommendations.

I think a lot of this is based on personal thoughts. From what I have read those who most likely said no, didn't have a situation where it was ever needed. I have always stressed buying extended warranties to my family. Have there been times where they were not needed? A few. Most however paid for themselves quickly considering the cost of repairs these days. Also when we buy a vehicle in this family, we tend to own them until the wheels fall off, or we hit 300k miles. So yeah, we usually get our money worth. When you figure the average cost of an extended warranty being $1500, and even financed out it would end up being around $2500, if you had to replace or do a major repair on the engine or transmission, it would pay for itself and them some right there. In the dealerships I have worked at I have seen countless times where the extended warranty repairs on engines or transmissions were $3000 or more. It's kind of like insurance. You may go 10 years without an accident, and through that time pay thousands in insurance premiums. But that one time you have an accident, you are sure glad that you had the insurance.

I didn't have it on my '08 Taco and it blew the engine (head) with 83,000 km. The stealership said it was a rad cap that let go, so therefore it wasn't a drivetrain issue. Hell, the rad cap neck blew off the rad! Where did that pressure come from? A blown head gasket perhaps?

I paid $5500 for a replacement engine installed that had 147,000 km on it (now no drivetrain warranty). I immediately traded in the truck for the buy-out value on a new 2012 Taco DC TRD MGM with leather. I got $2700 off the sticker price and demanded that the ECP 200,000 km Bumper to Bumper Warranty be thrown in for free, or I'd go buy the one that was availabe in the next town just out of spite.

They had a brand new Business Manager who cluster-fucked the deal in the office and accidently threw in the electronic rust module, paint protect, and leather protect at no charge. (He's not there anymore.)

I essentially got my $5500 back, 4 free oil changes, tube steps, bug guard, worry free driving for 6 years, and a brand new truck for an extra $100/mo in payments.

    :D

BTW, they sold the 2008 Taco with 83,000 km and a 147,000 km engine as a certified vehicle with a 100,000 km drive train warranty as if nothing had ever happened for $25 grand. Go figure.

Stop wasting money. This is STILL a legal scam. Yes, SOME people will benefit, and they will all speak up because they want to feel better about spending money needlessly, and some even got it without knowing because the finance guy slid it in without them knowing..,
Regardless, if you are that concerned about a big repair... SAVE that money every month, and you will always be prepared.
What!? You're not that disciplined? Of course you're not! This is why Rent A Center and Aaron's are still in business.

    My $.02.

This is not a legal scam as you so....politely put it. I have been in the auto repair industry for many years, and have seen these extended warranties work out very well for MANY customers. I am not speaking up to "feel better" about anything. It is simple math. Purchased an extended warranty on our Chrysler van. About a year into ownership (We bought it used) the transmission went out. I paid a $100 deductible, and Chrysler installed a new transmission. Would have cost me $4500 out of pocket. Instead, the warranty cost me only $1500. So even if financed it cost $2500, I got a $4500 transmission for $1600. Hmm... Sounds like a really good deal to me. I didn't even have to "save up" for it. And if I did, I would have had to pay the entire $4500. We won't even go into when I got the window regulator replaced later, or the air conditioning compressor. This is just one example. My dad, mom, and sister all have used their extended warranties to their benefit.

It is really quite rude for you to come in here and talk down on people that you don't know as if they are not money smart or money conscious. Maybe do a little research before you step into a conversation. I HAVE done my research on this.

    Like Bill posted above.
I add the extended warr on every vehicle I buy. I have never lost on it. The good thing is I pay the 100 deduct. I get paid to work on my own vehicle.
All it takes is one issue.
How would you like to try and save 100 grand and just let it sit there in case you got hurt and had to be in the hospital and have surgery.
If you want it, get it. If you don't, DON'T.

A bit over the top. This is my fifth Toyota Truck and there have not been a great deal of issues over the years. For the price, it only took one issue to match or exceed the price of the warranty. These things are expensive to work on. I purchased the 6-yr Platinum with my latest Tacoma. If I don't use the warranty, Toyota states they will buy it back in the contract. On top is 24 months of oil changes that don't count toward this. Not sure how this is not intelligent.

Maybe that was a little over the top.
    How's this?

If the company backing the warranty wasn't making a lot of money overall, then they wouldn't offer the warranty.

Read into that what you will

The last vehicle I bought, '09 Hyundai Elantra touring, I was offered an extended warranty for $1500. I said no and suddenly it was $800, I said no again. That tells me that is overpriced.

If I just had to have something that had a poor reliability rating or was overly complicated or put me in over my head financially I might consider it. But I doubt I would put my self in any of those situations.

Of course if you were on the auto repair side of the coin you would percieve a lot of benefit from the extended warranty. Your world is populated by people who are having vehicle problems. The large proportion of extended warranty purchasers that never used the benefits wouldn't be showing up in your sample.

Well to that the only thing I will say is: What do you think the purpose of a company is? To make money. They certainly are not going to offer something that allows them to break even or skim a tiny profit. That still does not make it a scam. Do you think that the Tacoma you buy at the dealership that is sold for $28k was actually built for just $26k? It is called free enterprise.

I have no problem with you not wanting to buy it if you don't want to. The two issues I had were you claiming it was a scam, and that those people who defended getting them were basically stupid. Those were my two issues.

Extended warranty on a Subaru paid off x4. Never had one on a Toyota and never needed it. Besides I have always heard that Toyota (especially) is a bitch to work with, and will look for whatever seam they can find to unravel the deal, and blame it on you (therefore no coverage). Subaru on the other hand bends over backwards to cover everything .. and then some.

Typically if you wait until a short time before your factory warranty expires, Toyota, as well as others that offer this service, will usually contact you will a much better deal than they offer you at initial purchase. Do your research and look for the best coverage, and be aware of the deductibles, and how they are applied. GMPP is one of the better ones out there, but I am not sure if they offer coverage for non-GM vehicles. Fidelity is one to be cautious over. They have been known to get pretty tricky with their deductibles.
