I was in that store less than a month ago. Pretty good selection, but certainly pricey.

How were you able to buy an auto? I can't get an auto without having to buy it off store premises. In other words, in the parking lot with no receipt.

 

We can own them but we cannot BUY them from store without military ID or police ID. So for example if you send me one (illegal to send by USPS) I can own it. If you were in another country and were to send it to me, it can be sent but it has to be taken apart (disabled) and sent in two packages. BUT...say if I were to buy one in AZ legally, I would not be able to drive over state lines with it legally. I'd have to mail it to myself.

I was offered to buy one from a knife shop but he said I would have to do it in the parking lot outside, and I would get no receipt for it. He says he does it all the time but I felt funny about it because that's not right. So I declined. So the only legal way for me to get an auto would be to have one mailed to me from out of state or country.

 

I think the law is worded in a way that make it illegal to posses in a vehicle or in public, if the blade is 2 inches or more. You can posses an auto of any size, as long as it never leaves your house. You can possess in public; an auto opening knife with a blade that is 1.99 inches or less.

There is actually no exemption written in CA law that says it's legal for LEO or military to possess them... So it's just as illegal for LEO to possess one in public... but who's gonna enforce that law...

 

Yeah I have a little Benchmade auto mite that's less than 2 inches. I have a few spring assists, one that was MISTAKEN to be an auto.

I'd like to have an auto but what's the use if you cannot take it out and use it? Not that I plan on stabbing anyone or anything, just nice to have.

It's just hard to actually BUY one from a store here without it be all scandalous and stuff. I didn't know that it was not stipulated that it was legal for LEO to possess them. I've seen a lot of cops have them on their person while on duty.

I know that Benchmade has a section in their catalog that is for LEO/military. Nice knives in there.

 

We were issued them while deployed. We had to carry a memorandum stating they were issued to us as a duty weapon to clear customs when returning to the states.

It was interesting times traveling back to the states post deployment. The TSA had just started the "no liquid" rule and we hadn't heard about it before leaving. They confiscated our toothpaste, shampoo, and other liquids in our carry on bags but we boarded the plane with our M4s and knives. It pissed off some folks, but I found it hilarious

 

the shop at fisherman's wharf? yea. all my Benchmades i got from them. they also recommended and sold me my spyderco sharpmaker, which essentially changed the way i sharpen things. love it.

their prices are kinda high, but i bet you could haggle a bit.

 

Yea, it's kinda dumb. Not only is there no exception for LEO, but I know quite a few that carry them anyways. To make it worse, there are also a fair amount of LEO here who don't know the differences between auto and assissted.

There's plenty of fire/ EMS guys that carry auto's here too... Pretty rare to hear them have of any issues from the cops. Professional courtesy I suppose.

 

Some of the Benchmades have that glassbreaker at one end and the strap cutter for seat belts. I'd be pretty upset if they didn't let the fire and medical emergency carry these. Life saving tools are what they SHOULD be called.

 

Seatbelt cutter and glassbreaker tips can can be on non-auto knives too. Those two features are completely legal.

I think the ones that have an "auto seatbelt cutter", the blade on the seatbelt cutter is far lass than the legal limit of 1.9", so when coupled with a full length blade, that is not auto, they're fine. The auto function, which opens by a button or a mechanism that has a spring or some other mechanical advantage is not directly attached to the blade; would only be illegal if it activated a blade longer than 1.9".

TBH the seat belt cutters are a gimmick and don't really provide any functional advantage over a a standard blade or trauma shears, and I've never seen anyone use one of those glass breaker tips.

The seat belt cutters on some knives are just a recess built into the handle, and those ones are absolutely worthless. The one's on the benchmades would probably be good for cutting 550 cord, though.
