    OK... here's a relevent question that hasn't yet been asked:

    I keep my used motor oil in a couple of old 5-gal paint buckets until the city has one of those "collect used oil" days.

    Can I mix the rear diff. oil w/ the old motor oil and do the same? I figure the answer is yes, but I know many here are more knowledgeable than me.

    Something you might want to add: Taking the spare tire off gives you a MUCH better angle for re-filling.

    Is there a thread started on the front diff change? I have 35,000 on my truck and this will probably be my next project. Alos I have an 07 trd sport dc short bed, I am assuming it has the LSD so I am going to want to run 75-90 or 80-90 in the diff and in the rear a thing of LSD addative? Thanks for the awesome write up.

    Do you have to add any additives if you have the E-Locker? I figure I might as well ask so when I screw up my next oil change in a new and exciting way, I'll know what to tell the mechanic. :)

    The LS diff has "friction plates" in it to allow power to be sent to both wheels. Being as oil is slippery, the friction modifyer helps the plates grab and hold. With out it, they would "Chatter", wich means they are grabbing, then releaseing.

    my reg cab 2nd gen calls for 80/90 in the rear, but 75/90 is more available to me. for comparisson sake, is this like engine oil 5w30 and 10w30? both will work in my differential?

    also i dunno if it was mentioned or not but i think i read that any gear oil with the classification GL-5 is good for hypoid gears.

    Sean, why not just put some penetrating oil on the bolt, and find a nice pipe for some extra leverage on your ratchet?

    To add, many times tapping the wrench with a hammer will loosen the bolt. Tapps...not a Gorilla blow. :)
