I use my HAM way more often than my CB. Reception and clarity is ridiculous on a ham. My CB is a brand new perfectly tuned legit setup and it still sucks unless your all close together. But even then the audio is horrible. Nice having both though that's for sure. I'm guaranteed to use one or the other (or sometimes even both) every time I wheel

I have a police scanner and my work radio with me at all times. Well except when I'm in school. Or when I'm out and about. Actually I just keep them in the car/truck and listen in when driving.

Problem with CB is most people buy used CBs on here and just plug em in yo some cheap antenna and that's it. I think most of these used CBs are probably not tuned correctly to begin with so many are already damaged from the get go. Even if the new owner sets it up all legit (which most don't) it still doesnt get great reception cuz its been abused. People with CBs don't understand how important it is to tune correctly with an SWR and use quality cables and radio.

with that said, I'm willing to bet that less than 25% of the people you wheel with who have CBs actually have them tuned correctly. So having a good setup is pointless anyways if everyone else's radios are putting out a bunch of static and feedback

How do you go about tuning? I'm new to the cb stuff, but I'm thinking about getting one for later use...

You need an SWR meter. Tuning depends on how your antenna is set up. Different brands/models tune in different ways. Keying you mic on a CB without an antenna plugged in, or a crappy or untuned antenna will damage
the radio internals and destroy transmit/recieve power and range.

thats great you did you research. 8 miles is very very impressive with a 2' antenna
i have a 4' firestik 2 tuned perfectly and a brand new 75 wxst and I can't get no 8 miles that's for sure. At least not in any kind of urbanized area.

I'm kind of a nerd at heart. Lol. My sis actually flew me out to her school to help her with her rc plane project. Plane kept going out of range and kept crashing. They didn't no the effective range. So I crunch the numbers and got the range for their plane. It was fine until they decided to double check my calculations. Needless to say they crashed another plane. Smh
